My 40 Shield is currently at S&W for the magazine drop problems.I went to my gunshop today and talked to a gentleman whose Shield(40) blew up in his hands the other night. He shot a few rounds and the mag dropped. He shot a few more and shot a double tap.The first round cleared and the second blew the right side of the gun out.Luckily, he wasn't hurt.I'm really concerned about the reliability of this gun when I get it back.I also have the 9mm and have had no problems with it.This problem makes me very leery of shooting any of them again.Has anyone else had this happen?

I have the 40 and I have not had the mag drop problem. My dad has the 9 and his extended mag had a weak spring. He had several fte and ftf. Contacted Smith and they sent label to return the mag. My brother in law has the 40 and he has not had the mag drop problem either.

FTF could be mag related, FTE don't. There is another problem with your father's gun.

Well, In my personal humble opinion,
It appears I may be wrong about the gift part of the laws,
but my bottom line here is,
It's my name and handwriting on the application answering that question,
my ID being used to make the purchase,
and my door that BATFE or some other Law Enforcement Agency may come knocking at.
I don't like anyone enough to risk answering that knock on the door.

And from watching the video all the way through;
If I decided to go ahead and make the purchase and give the weapon as a gift,
I need go to a FFL Dealer with the gift recipient and the weapon,
and have it transferred to their name as a gift.
Don't just hand it to them and say "Here you go" !

Thanks for pointing out that ATF "Theater" web site by the way. Good training.

I emailed the customer service rep (david) back to ask if i could purchase another set of shield mags with the bump added. Waiting for a reply.

Hello,

They are in the process of revising the magazines now.  We will not ship any until that is complete.

Regards,

Dave

Will they have been modified with the bump on the mag catch slot? Or will they be the same spec that came with my pistol. Have you changed the specs yet?

Hello,

You can order additional magazines by calling Customer Service at 800-331-0852.

So lets all hope that a revised magazine design is on its way soon. That seems like the best long term solution.

My .40 Shield (DXX series) was received at S&W on Sept. 4. When I had talked to a service rep earlier about the mag drop problem, he told me to send the pistol only back for service to S&W. I specifically asked if I should include the magazines also since I had read here that some had been told by S&W to include them. The rep at that time told me not to send the mags.

This morning I got a call from a S&W rep asking me why I hadn't included the mags. I told him that I had asked about that earlier, but was instructed not to send them. This rep says they do need the mags and that he will send me a new mailer for the mags so they can be modified. I asked if this modification was adding the dimples, and he said it was. He also said that he will be sending me new mags also along with the pistol. Unfortunately I didn't think to ask if the pistol would be returned before my mags were received, or will they want to send everything back at once.

Just picked up my Shield 40 serial number DXY today. Took it home for cleaning and then to the range. Put 130 rounds (Blazer Brass and Federal) through it with no problems thus far. I used the 6rd mag for a total of 18 shots, all the others came out of the extended mag. The slide release was very tough/tight at first but loosened up a little. The 40 is alot more snappier than the 9mm I demo'd. It's not unmanageable but there's a difference.

mine was a DXY as well and was test fired around 8/20, but did not have the new mags/modified... were your dimpled?

Good luck on that. I was shorted a magazine in a brand new box back in the middle of August and have not received anything.

I called S&W yesterday and was told that they didn't have any.

Anyone want to bet whether they are putting magazines in with the weapons that they are boxing up/shipping out....but can I get a single mag so that I have one to take on the trip that this weapon was bought for a month ago....noooooo

Just spoke with S&W Customer Service tonight to inquire on the repair progress of my Mag Dropping Shield 40 they received on 09/06/12. The CSR told me that S&W Repair Shop is 3 weeks out for repairing firearms and returning them to customers. Momma always told me to work on my patience... and S&W is helping me out. :( It's not all bad. I brought home a S&W M&P 15-22 today... so happiness reigns in Dixie. ;)

I just received mine back Thursday and all they did was replace the magazine release.
They did not dimple out the magazines.

Well, I am just back from the range
and mine WAS a dropper with S/N DXX1###
and the casing envelope is dated 06/28/2012

S&W replaced the mag release only,
they DID NOT dimple the magazines,
and returned my marked originals in fact.

I just ran 100 rounds of Winchester FMJ,
7 rounds at a time from the extended magazine
without skipping a beat, or so much as a wiggle.
So for now, I'm happy. It works.

I'm still confused as to how S&W is determining
which of the three possible repairs are required.
(Mag Release only, Dimpled mags only, or both)
And why on earth they still don't have the customer service reps
giving out the correct information to people calling in?
They really are creating more problems for themselves over this.
