M&P SHIELD 0.40 CALIBER MAGAZINE DROP PROBLEM POLL

I got a call from S&W this morning. Mark told me they were "fitting some new magazines to my gun", and that he would be sending me a shipping label to send back the 2 original ones which I didn't ship back with my gun, and they would do a swap. He said the original ones would just drop out again if I kept them. I didn't send them in because all the previous callers were told not to; I filled out their warranty return request on the web site, so never actually spoke with a person.

It makes me wonder when we'll be able to purchase extra mags, since obviously all the ones currently floating around are undersized or at least need the "bump". The remark about "fitting them to my gun" certainly wasn't encouraging -made it sound like they aren't all the same.

You can get extra mags online, I purchased (2) short and (1) extended.

I wish that S&W would just own up to the problem. I called a week ago about the issue and they said I would see an email about return. I have received nothing. The problem is the mags, and putting a dimple or bump is useless. The mags are undersized. I like the plastic coating idea. I am going to epoxy a shim down the backside. As for the small mag I think the problem is the same, but when you shoot with the small mag your finger sits under mag.

Just a suggestion, try applying the epoxy to whole outside of the magazine, but not more that .015". It will tighten the mag and give catch something more to grab on to. Make sure roughen up the mag surface or the epoxy won't stick, oh make sure to clean with alcohol as well. I just put a baked enamel on the new one I got and it holding quite well. Glock will not tell what the coating is on their mags, so I sent one to our lab and asked them to break it down with their lab equipment.

If you really want a real piece of gunsmithing. I bought a Kahr PM9 and these jerks put a polymer front slide guides, metal on the back ones. I like the gun but I am confused about their thinking.

Did you get modified mags? Are they a different part number than the originals?

I need to order mags. Even though my gun hasn't had the drop problem, to be on the safe side I decided to dimple my mags. The metal is very hard (brittle). One of them chipped... Bummer. It wouldn't be so bad if I could just go the gun shop and buy a few replacements.

I love the Shield 40 but need to get it ironed out before using it as a CCW. The gun is otherwise very reliable, accurate, compact and potent. Some good mags on the market would put this issue to bed for once and all.

My .40 Shield arrived back from S&W today:).

19 days from me shipping to them and receiving it back. That is pretty good turnaround to me!

S&W Repair order stated:
Replaced Mags
Range Tested/Meets Spec

The new mags do have the "bump" on the mag catch slot others have mentioned. Have not had a chance to shoot it yet, but I assume they corrected the Mag drop problem. Will post result after I shoot it.

Put 200 rounds through it at the range today (Federal FMJ, HST and Gold Dot short barrel) and had shot 100 more before I returned to S&W. On first mag had slide lock open once, but worked flawlessly after that:). Looks like I have a new daily carry gun!

Do we assume these mags still have the "bump" and that the coating is simply to tighten the mags in the magwell? Is it possible that coating the mags to decrease lateral movement is a better "fix" than the "bump" given the posts advocating shims and tape strips.

I wonder if the 40 Shield mags were engineered to be coated and... you remember Momma saying, "Don't hurry or you'll make mistakes"?

I am not telling anyone to modify their magazines, but to answer your question I still put the bump, but if I refine the mag coating I believe it will eliminate the bump by adding .015" to the thickness of the mag, thus eliminating to need for the bump.

I spoke S&W and they are toying with the same idea or a new magazine design. But, don't hold your breathe, he said it would be 3 to 5 months if they even make a change. I just couldn't get them to admit there is a problem, only that some guns need a slight modification. So I took that as no recall. He also said we would not see the M&P Shield 9 on the shelves for a few more month, but said the are shipping a 150 out a day(B.S.) most stores have seen them since June.

My dad told me if it is broke fix it.

something that got lost in the breeze was the new mag catch. i took a look and was unable to find if the #1 cast catches were different than #2 or #4.

another thing that was mentioned was a sharp feed ramp. has anybody played with that yet? does it need shaping or just a polish?

I don't know anything about mag releases, but I had my carry ammo HST 180 gr. hanged up on the feed ramp. It was razor sharp, it dug into the head of the bullet. First I polished it and then used a dremel to round down the end of the feed ramp. It took a 15 minutes and it now fires with no problem. If you try it, which I not advising you to do, but be careful when rounding off the feed ramp. You might want to use a file instead, unless you use a dremel often.

The mags I got were on Ebay, no dimple. They are factory mags but the package did not have anything on it expect M&P Shield 40 Magazines.

I am with you, I don't trust this gun as my CCW. I am still carrying the Glock 27 Gen 4. However, I recently purchased a Kahr PM9, nice gun and no problems after 600 rounds, it was treat not to have pick up the mag after every shot. I am just not sure how long the polymer front slide guide will hold up. Dumb design. I bought a Taurus "Slim" 709, I had to send it back to the factory 4 times and they finally refunded my money. I hope the Shield doesn't end up in the same boat.

I got my .40 Shield back today - new magazine catch and 2 new magazines with the "bump". I ran 50 rounds through it this afternoon and it functioned flawlessly. I'll put another 100 or so through it tomorrow. I'm guessing they have it figured out now..... Another few hundred rounds, and this will be ready to be my daily carry.

I put another 200 rounds through it today without any problems. It appears the new mag catch and modified mags effectively solve the problem. Issue resolved - this is now my new daily carry. Tomorrow I'm going to try a few boxes of personal protection rounds and figure out which hollow point will be my carry ammo - usual suspects to participate ;)

I just hit the Jack Pot. I have a friend that is the assistant manager at large gun store. He just called me, they just received two Shields 9 and one Shield 40, 20 minutes before they closed. I told him I would purchase all of them, he said that I could have one of the 9s and the 40. He wants one of 9s, he said he didn't want the hassle with 40 problem. The wife will be so happy, she will finally get her M&P Shield 9. I sure hope the gun ban after the elections doesn't wipe me out. He did tell me his boss was going to return the 40 because of the problems he had with customers who bought them, but seeing I know the problem he would sell it to me for $ 379, sweet. Just think now I will have two to work on.

Unbelievable ,
and at $70 off MSRP in addition to getting both calibers.
Even if you send the .40 back to S&W immediately, it's worth it.
Play the lottery tonight,
Luck like this doesn't come often.
EXPLOIT IT !
CONGRATS ! ! !

If you don't mind me asking, what did you pay for your Shield? I got mine for $ 399.00 and Academy was selling the 9s for the same price. I figure I was only saving $ 20.00. Have the prices gone up since they first released them? If they have, maybe I should just leave the 40 in the box and sell it as new. But, then if it had problems I would have deal with a p...ed off buyer. The store opens in 20 minutes and he is holding them for me, I will have to figure this problem out later. :)

I just had another thought, he never told me how much the 9 mm was. I have no idea what the going price is.

the dealer/LGS sells them for what ever they want... Retail is "Suggested" as 449. thats what i got mine for. others get them for cheaper or more. so i think it has to do with the shop its self, if they can order enough of them they get a break, so they sell them cheaper.

I paid $449 at a local Gun Show for my .40,
but every dealer in my area had quoted me the same price, even though they didn't have any in stock.
So when I saw one sitting on a dealer's table priced at MSRP,
the paperwork was started, and I didn't even question the price.

I'm still waiting/hoping on Buds!! for my military pricing.

I found one in stock recently, ordered it, and immediately afterward the page showed out of stock again. They are getting Shields but you have to be quick, and lucky. It's a great pistol, and the $335 price makes it even better.

Howdy folks, I joined this forum just to post in this thread...

I recently turned 21, and decided it was time to get my concealed carry (better to have it and not need it...) and a pistol. After talking to a few buddies, and a few gun shops I was sold on the shield. I had not researched on the forums however. I purchased a shield 40, and after the 5 day wait, picked it up on Thursday. I just took it to the range today. My mother who joined me (family bonding I guess) and I put 100 rounds of RBS 180 grain through the gun. Using both the 6 and the 7 round magazines. Never once did I have the magazine drop. Both of my magazines appear to be 'un-dimpled' where the catch is, and my catch is metal. I will say however, I might have a poor shooting grip as my left hand does cover the magazine a bit, I'll try shooting without my left hand on it as much and see what happens. This is my first pistol I have ever owned, and so far I am in love with it. I plan on going to the range tomorrow and putting at least another 50 (will probably end up being more) rounds down range with it. My serial is a DXY----, and the brass it came with was marked as 8-15-12. Ill keep you guys updated should my magazine drop, but I'll wait to modify the mag until it does drop.

Matt
