you guys should start a new thread titled; "Shield 40 fail to return to battery" problem poll:D:D

Because S&W will not reconize and fix this problem for all 40 cal owners they are selling a lot of Springfield XD'S!
I bought one and love it! Much better customer service and a better gun!

It was the "Made In Croatia" stamp that finally made up my mind.
I ran through another hundred rounds of speer lawman today without a problem. I'm confident S&W resolved the problem with this weapon.

still haven't gotten mine back yet... I called last week and they said it should be headed back later this week... I am thinking about calling them up and seeing if they can replace it with a 9mm.

We have Red Jacket Firearms about five minutes from here, I know they build assualt rifles, etc., but he is probably the best gunsmith around. I want him to look at this gun and get his opinion. I will post what he tells me.

Update: I took the Shield to range tonight it fired 200 rounds flawlessly. It still will stop a 1/4" back, but not when firing or racking the gun, only if you pull the slide back slowly. I have no idea why the rep was banging it in on bench, it only takes a gentle slap to get slide into position. The magazine never fell out once after 100 (180gr. HST) through it, so I guess they fixed that part. I am still taking it to Red Jacket Firearms tomorrow, just to get a professional gunsmith opinion. Another update is that S&W will no longer servicing Walthers, some other company is taking the Walther service over. I have a Walther PPS and maybe this it not the lastest news flash. :D

While I would be very interested in reading what they have to say,
I honestly wonder if you would even get in the door to see them with a single stock production line handgun.
But please do try and let us know. Thanks!

called s&w cs today and they said they are waiting on parts... but it should be soon. They received my pistol on the 3rd, parts being magazines? lol

After "Bumping" both magazines (at home) ~250 rnds w/o any mag drops. Another 150 and I'll be comfortable with using this as my every day carry.

I have two magazines on order directly from Smith and Wesson, They are backordered right now but i am told i will have them within the next week. I will Post the results when i recieve them. I am also wondering if they will be dimpled or completely resized mags.

Good luck on that. I have been waiting on the customer service to send me a 7-round mag that I was shorted when I purchased the pistol back in August and STILL HAVE NOT gotten it.

What a crock. I am about fed up with this new pistol craze. If they can't support them, then they shouldn't be selling them.

I just put one on layaway today. What are the mags supposed to look like, should they have a dimple or not?
Thanks

You will not know if you have a mag dropper or not, until you put about 200 rounds through it. Serial numbers have helped some, but not all. I have two .40s and one has not given me any problems. The first one I bought already had a visit to S&W and they dimpled the large mag. I was lucky to speak to an honest S&W rep and S&W is well aware of the problems, not only the mag drop. Don't get me wrong the gun is great and it has its problems, well some do. I put 600 rounds through the one I recently purchased and it has been flawless. At same time I bought the 9mm and not one ounce of problem. I guess the only problem is the cost of ammo you need to be able to trust the gun. Ammo is getting more expense as the election gets closer and the selection is decreasing everytime I buy it. If I was you and your gun is fresh off the production line you might be spared any of the problems. If this is your only hand gun I would start buying ammo, if the gun has a problem it will get resolved (hopefully, I saw a post about parts not being available or maybe just the mags), I can't see ammo getting cheaper. As far as magazines for it I have twelve now (a lot of surfing). I hope it works out for you. :)

I was lucky and I did get in the door and the ower of Red Jacket use to own the gun range I shoot at. He remembered me and he said he won't work on it, he would give me his opinion on slide sitting back a 1/4". He says it the way the slide was made and the round in the mag is touch it every so lightly, that's why a light slap on it will reseat it. He told me the S&W rep was full of S..t about the ammo being made today not being in spec. He did say some of imported ammo has cause him problems as well. He offered no solution, only to send it back to S&W again, with pictures. Not exactly the answer I hoping for, but I tried. Well I give up, I am going back to work on coating the slide again.

I hate to ask you this, but why did you buy the Shield after reading over 400 posts about the .40? I own Glocks, Kahr, Rugers, Walthers and of course the three Shields, I had nothing to lose. After you read all these posts you went out and bought one, why? Just curious. I purchased the Shield because I watched Hickok45 on Youtube shotting the 9mm and he had good things to say about the feel and trigger and he's a Glock guy. To make matters worse he doesn't own one, he borrowed it. Stupid me I wanted a Shield so bad I bought the first one I could get my hands on, which was the .40, to make things worse I bought another .40. After watching his video again, he was only commenting on the 9mm, which doesn't seem to have problems. I will admit I would consider carrying the new .40 as my primary carry, I just trust my Kahr PM9 and Glock 27 more.

TMAXXII I had originally gone into the fun store to buy 1 of two guns. A Berreta nano or either the Sig P290. I just happened to ask if they had any shields and they had one left (the one I have on layaway) and for my intended purpose and comparing the 3 guns I felt the S&W was a good choice. I work with several people that have the shield both in 9 and 40 and they have had no problem even with a few hundred rounds down the pipe.

Just an fyi. I sent my Shield 40 in because of the mag drop problem and they had it back to me in 12 days with four mags that had been dimpled. Put 250 rounds thru it yesterday and not one problem. I am very happy with this gun now and also my Shield 9.

Based on your other two choices, I think you made the right choice. I looked at the Nano, but it wasn't a gun I would of been happy with. I am not a Sig guy so I really don't much about them. By nature I am Glock guy that's why I have four of them. The 23, 19, 27and 26 all Gen 4s. They aren't pretty and they aren't light, but they are depenable. I wish I had bought the Shield 9 instead, but begger can't be picky. I had to give the 9 I recently bought to my wife and don't ask why I bought a second .40, but I am trying to find her something else to get it back from her. She wants my Kahr PM9, dream on, I am trying to find a 9 for myself. What is the Sig 290 like? I quess a better question is why you choose the Shield over the Sig? I think once you fire your new Shield you will love it, and IF you have a problem you can fix it yourself or send it back to good old S&W. I also bought some ammo last night 2000 of range rounds and 1000 rounds of defence rounds, it cost about 33% more than 9 months ago. I think I am going double my order seeing ammo is not coming down. Well, like I said before good luck with the Shield. When do you pick it up? I will be interested on how you like it, it a sweet shooting gun.

Mag works good

Might be the position of the release. But I have a brand new .40 HAD1980 from August 2012, and have been through many rounds and hot swap changes. No issues.

My Shield .40 7-round magazine drops on every shot -- has from the very first time I shot the gun. Now, I find out this is very common with the Shield .40 and I'll have to wait a minimum of a month or two to get it fixed.

I don't know if I'll ever be able to trust this gun, so basically it is now a boat anchor (actually too light to be a good anchor). I don't think I'll ever be able to trust my full-size M&P now either because of this, although I've not had any problems with it yet (bought the full-size M&P .40 a little over a month ago; bought the Shield .40 about 2 or 3 weeks ago).

I had problems about 15 or 16 years ago with a S&W semi-auto pistol and swore off of them (still loved the revolvers, though), but then I heard about how great the M&P line was so I jumped back onto the band wagon -- big mistake.
Guess I should have stuck with my Sigs, H&Ks, FNs, etc.

TMAXXII, Well I can already tell I'm going to like you as I am a BIG Glock fan myself. The main reason I went with the shield is the price difference between it and the sig, it was roughly 100.00 more and I have heard good things about the shield, this still has me wondering on what to do as I have read some people have no problems with the shield 40. I really like the compactness but I may change my mind and hope they don't get upset with me for them sitting on this gun that everyone has to have for a week. We will know Friday.

Mine drops either mag every 3rd or forth round. My last SMITHWESSOIN ever!
Anybody got a XDs they would like to trade for my 40cal Shield? I will consider paying fair amount of boot!
Bought an xds. Love it! Sold the Shield. Gave the new owner all the history and a good price. Lost about $150 in the deal but I got something I trust and enjoy. Will NEVER buy another S&W product EVER!
