Bought an MP Shield Serial #DXY ####. Ongoing problem with the magazine drop. The mag will drop about 10 times for everyone 100 rounds. I don't trust it all as a home defense weapon. I'll pick up a golf club before I pick up the SW MP Shield.

My Shield 40 is serial number HBLxxxx. No problems with the magazines or anything else except those darn tight sights.

Those sights are really pissing me off!
If they made the shield with a smooth trigger pull and easily removeable sights, the gun would be near perfect! Ooops I forgot about the stupid thumb safety.

Contact S&W Customer Service and they will issue
an RMA and pre-paid Fed-Ex shipping label for you to return it.
They repaired mine and while it may not be the most elegant of solutions,
it works now where it didn't before.
And I have put 500 rounds through it since the repair.
There's no reason to own a weapon you don't trust.

2014 Update

Just an update to this thread. Another add to those experiencing the issue. Mine worked great for about 500 rounds and then started having the issue. I called S&W CS and he stated he was unaware of any magazine drop issue. When I cited the forums, he got defensive. End of it is, they still are not admitting an issue, but I am sending my gone back to get "evaluated". I did some tests and found that there is a noticeable difference between where the standard magazine disengages vs the extended, and if I lock the position where the standard magazine catches, the extended magazine will slide in and out of the well. Standard magazine works fine, no drops.

Serial number DXT***

ive never had a problem. eat every round and doesnt malfunction what so ever

Love the .40 Shield. I use it for pocket carry so I only really use the short mag. I have used the extended at the range with no problems. I have about 4000 rounds through one of my .40s. No problems so far. ❤️

Yes I loved my little 40 caliber shield until this issue started happening frequently. I got to thinking about the fact that I bought this pistol for only one reason... Concealed defensive carry. Of coarse I shoot it at the range because I have multiple handguns and each one shoots different than the other so of course although I hope and pray the situation never arrives and I do have to defend a life against a gun in the hands of a mentally disturbed individual but it happens to someone most everyday. Now with that said, as I said before I have multiple handguns and with the exception of my Shield, all my handguns all but one ( M&P Shield) are Sigs, I saw a friends Shield and thought it was a nice little gun and decided to go out and buy one for myself, after several hundred rounds being fired through it all of a sudden the magazine starts dropping out. Well after this began to happen I could not get two thoughts out of my mind #1, what happens if lord forbid the situation does arrive and I have to use a gun in defense and it happens to be that it happened on a day that I was carrying my Shield, I pull it out and fire one round and the magazine hits the floor, next second I am dead because I had an inferior defense weapon with me at the time. Now to my second thought... Why did I ever put myself in this situation to begin with when I KNOW that there is NO EXCEPTION for a Sig Sauer... PERIOD!!! I would never sell someone a gun for defense that I know may or may not do its job if it was ever needed, so two things resulted from my purchase of my Smith & Wesson M&P Shield... #1 I have a very expensive pistol that is only 100% reliable to use as a paper weight and #2... Why did I waste almost $500 on a Shield, when I should have wisely spent close to $1000 on another Sig or better yet not bothered because their is NO better conceal carry handgun than the Sig P239 SAS Gen2 357sig that I had been carrying to begin with, not only is my Sig reliable ALWAYS but also is a handgun with a 3.3" barrel, and is not as accurate but noticeably MORE accurate than any and all full size S&W handguns I've shot. I would never be out without my Sig, there just is no substitute for a Sig Sauer. Sure you may pay twice the price but the old saying about getting what you pay for is a very true one and I may have paid more than twice the amount of money for my Sig P239 SAS but at the same time, I did by far get more than twice the reliability, accuracy and all around quality than I did when I bought my $450 Smith & Wesson paper weight... A mistake I WILL NOT make again... ESPECIALLY WHEN IT COMES TO THE DIFFFERENCE OF EITHER LIVE OR DIE!! I CHOOSE LIFE EVERY TIME!!!
