I found this on YouTube. Kind of makes me wonder now if S&W designed the M&P so the slide drops when a loaded mag is inserted. Funny it doesn't do it everytime. What do you guys think?

Granted, my M&P9 is brand new so I don't have a ton of experience with it yet. But for me to use the slide stop as a release (I know, it's a slide stop NOT a release) I have to use both thumbs on both stop levers to get it to release the slide. I like the fact mine slams shut when I insert a mag. It did not do it every time, but about 80% of the time mag insertion did release the slide. I can always just pull back and release the slide if it doesn't release. No complaints from me, I like it no matter how the slide gets released.

My M&P9 Full Size does it most of the time and it was bench fired 4/23/10 by a guy named Jose so it is a fairly new weapon. Now when I put in a mag I look to see if it actually closed since I have a tendency to rack the slide after inserting a new mag!

i noticed that i can get the slide to drop consistently with the right amount of force while inserting the mag. it does not cause me a problem, but i also keep in the habbit of also hitting the slide release just so i'm not reliant on the mag slap alone.

It is a great debate with Glocks too that comes up frequently.

i have read threads in other forums about glocks having the same "issue", but as i sit here fondling my g19 i can't get the slide to release no matter how hard i slam the mag. i guess it's a case by case basis.
Video aside the issue exists. The bad part of that "feature" is inconsistency. I've took defensive pistol class with my 40FS and my instructor just told me to rack the slide even if it been released by slam (potentially wasting a round). The motivation was really simple: would you bet your life that round being chambered during auto release, plus it's bad muscle memory...

I'm with Chuck and iouri. If my pistol auto forwarded I would send it back to get fixed. This is not a feature, its a failure to perform as designed.

This is a flaw in the design and combined with a steep barrel ramp can lead to jams. Almost any pistol can be made to do it, the M&P just does it super easy and frequently jams based on a wide range of feedback expressed on other forums. Reloading even at speed is a finesse move. But, even really good trainers report having the Smith auto forward when other autos don't for them.
Clutch-n-Throttle posted a possible fix in this thread. I am going to try it on mine, cause I'd rather have consistency...
