M&P Sport II Optic Ready Question

Yes sir. I found the link this AM

Ok... grab a tape measure and measure the rail that is part of the forged upper. I guarantee that rail is longer than 2".

In your box, your rifle should have come with a 2" section of rail. It will have screws and cam nuts to attach it to your hand guard. You set this rail over the oblong slots on your hand guard and when you tighten the screws the cam nuts turn so that it can't come out of the slot. That is your M-LOK picatinny rail. It might be loose, or it might be attached to the hand guard already.

Here is a video... you can move to the 2 minute mark if you want to skip hearing about the guy's rifle and hand guard he chose... But it shows how to mount the rail section.

Ok, I do not understand why you keep pointing me to the Handguards. 1st of all I am very familiar with M Lock system. My handguards are MLock, they have accessories attached as we speak. I am referring to the the rail on the upper receiver where my optic sight is. Additionally the rifle comes ready to shoot out of the box. The 2" rail refers to the MLock attachment on the "Picitinny Style Rail.
y question on this thread concearns if a nother sight will work. Also the rail is made by Smith and Wesson. I have other firearms
withe picitinny rails. I tried to see if an accessory would work but the rail is too wide and it just would work, I am referring to a MantisX firearms device.
I have attached pics of my rifle for reference.

I keep referring to the hand guard because that is where the "m lok picatinny rail" is. The rail on your upper where your optic is mounted, as shown in your pics, is a picatinny rail... not MLOK anything. In the 4th post in this thread, you stated "The rail is is a MLock Picitanny Style Rail" and that is not correct.

Look at this rifle, exact same as yours except for the handguard. Note that it does not mention "M-LOK" at all. The rail on the upper is MIL-STD-1913 Picatinny. This is the same forged upper as yours, just different handguards.

If you have a device that mounts to a Picatinny rail and the rail is too wide, one of two things is going on... Either the rail on the upper is out of spec, or the mount is out of spec.

With my Sport and mounts that I have used, I have found that for some of the mounts, I can loosen them enough to attach on to my rail. Others, I have to take the cross bolt completely out before I can get it to go over the rail. But I have been able to mount them all.

I stand corrected. That is a standard Picitinny Rail. After really looking at the optic mount I figured out what these websites are advertising incorrectly. The 2" picitinny "style rail is actually the adapter on the optic and riser, which measured exactly 2".I also retried my Mantis X system and it fits. So thanx for the help, it is appreciated brother!!

Good that you got it sorted, GunnyPapa. I have a M&P 15 Sport OR which has a Picatinny on top, and a tiny one on the gas block for additional sights. I added a new aftermarket M-Lock handguard to get more access points, so it now looks much like yours, I imagine.

You will have to let us know how that MantisX works with a rifle. I saw them a few years ago, but they didn't have a rifle app, only handgun at that time.

I will letyou all know. Been using it for a couple years. Best trainer out there!! Especially when you are just sitting around with nothing to do at home. It improved and/or sharpened skills hands down. The new app has just about every make and model out there. Whats great you can use it at the range in live fire mode.

But then again, have you looked at it from this perspective? If the rail is ....:D

Well, if you just have to kick the hornets nest... That adapter is pure picatinny as well, but to his main question, any device that is made to attach to a picatinny rail should work fine on the rail on his upper... :)

Hey pasound,

I have an '09 M&P 15T (awesome except for the proprietary barrel nut that only accepts a couple Leapers UTG handguards).

Question for you:
I've got a buddy that just picked up a M&P 15 Sport OR with the railed front gas block and I want to recommend he adds an extended rail.

Of course this gas block is not low-profile, so when you installed your MLOK, did you have to remove the railed gas block or do you have a hand guard that clears it?

Thanks!

If you are talking a free float extended hand rail, chances are the rail will not clear the OR factory gas block. Per @pasound's post above, he is using the Magpul drop in carbine length rail and is not dealing with the gas block since it's a drop in rail. If your buddy wants a longer handguard that is free floated and slips over the gas block, he will have to swap to a low profile gas block.
