M&P Sport, PEPR, 3-9X40 scope, and MBUS?

Hey guys, quick question for yall. I have a Sport, bought it three years ago as my first rifle. Needless to say, I love it! It has worn some different furniture since then, but It currently has a leupold 3-9X40 Mark AR scope with a 1in tube and mil-dot reticle. The scope is mounted on a 1in riser with 1/2in weaver rings. Here's a picture.

I initially bought the riser on advice from some guys at CheaperThanDirt because i was worried about not clearing the front sight post. I have read a lot of posts saying that on 3X or greater, the front sight post will almost disappear. With the current set-up, I have to use a lower cheek weld to get proper sight picture, and the scope needs to move forward just a little to get optimum eye relief. I have to fully extend my stock to get decent eye relief.

I am considering a Burris PEPR scope mount, which i'm hoping will fix both of these problems. The questions i have are:

Will my MBUS fit underneath the scope? I have seen a picture on here of someones rifle with this configuration, but i believe the scope was a 30mm and it looked like a tight fit.

Either way, i am pretty set on the PEPR mount. just wondered if anyone on here has used this mount with a scope like mine and if they were able to use the Magpul flip up sight underneath it. What do yall think?

P.S.- Here's a few groups I shot last week off a cheap table with folding legs from walmart and a backpack using Federal 55gr xm193. I'll own the flyers. Really loving my Sport with the 1/8 twist and 5R rifling!

i just put a knock off pepr mount on my mp 10. Its great quality and got on ebay for like 20 bucks. I would think you would have room for the BUIS, but can say 100%

I realize that this is a slightly different class of rifles, but it's overall dimensions should still apply and I hope will help answer your question. It is a S&W M&P 15-22 with a Nikon P-223 3X9x40 scope mounted on a Burris PEPR with QD mount and it has the Magpul folding sights on it. When the sights are folded there is approximately 3/16" clearance. By the way, the PEPR mount so far has been great. Hope this helps.

What is the point of installing a MBUS on a rifle with a scope? You will remove the scope in the field so you can use the MBUS? In my opinion, the MBUS is good to use with red dots sights, not scopes. If you want backup iron sights, This is what you should look for.

Regarding your eye relief, you need the back of the scope even or in front of your charging handle. The Burris PEPR is really nice and if you want to save some coin, this Chinese one isn't bad either.

Hope this helps.

Thanks for the help. I see your point chris, but since my sport has the fixed front sight, it would seem strange to put another front sight on at an angle. I'm really thinking more along the lines of "if my scope goes down or gets knocked off zero". right now if that happened, i would have a rifle with no sights, so just having the mbus underneath the scope is a good backup IMO. rbuzz posted what i was really hoping to see. Any problems with the front sight post and scope on the 15-22?

Nice rifle Bigchief! I'm thinking an M&P 10 will be my next Smith

I have a 2-7x Vortex mounted on my sport in Nikon P series rings. The Eyepiece on the vortex clears my rear BUIS...just barely. I had a 3-9x40 Bushnell on my old Sport in cheap mount I got on amazon that also cleared my BUIS. Both the cheap mount and the Nikon P Series are 1" from the center of the scope to the rail.

I have a new Leupold VX3 on my hunting rifle and it has a smaller eyepiece than this Vortex. My guess is that you'll clear it with no problem. You can look up the specs on the leupold site to get the dimensions for your scope and then see if the rings you're buying with give you enough clearance, if you want to be sure.

Here's my sport with the Vortex. I've never seen the front sight through the scope with the 2-7 or 3-9 power scope on any setting through these rings.

My M&P 15-22 is the MOE version and it came with the Magpul folding front sight, but there is no problem with it and the scope. Even if I were to flip up the front sight, it does not show up through the scope, and it is even wider than the A2 sight on your rifle.
I think Chris has a valid point in a way. Once you put a scope on a rifle you will probably use the scope 99% of the time. But in my case the rifle came with the front and rear Magpul folding sights and I prefer to leave them on the rifle for three reasons: 1) I think that anyone should train with and be able to use iron sights on their rifles even if they have a red dot, scope, or whatever, and 2) if for some reason the scope were to become unusable, you could still use the rifle with the iron sights. I spent a few dollars more and got the PEPR mount with the QD so that I could remove the scope quickly if I had to, and 3) since the rifle came with the sights, I would rather keep them on the rifle just in case, instead of taking them off and throwing them in a drawer. I realize that the angle front and rear sights could be installed and would be handy as a backup, but they present their own set of problems.
In RP91's case his rifle has the A2 front sight installed. He could modify his rifle by taking off the front sight and installing a new low profile gas block, and the angle sights, but that's a pretty big expense for a new block and the new angle sights. To me it wouldn't be worth it because when you have a scope, you rarely use the iron sights, except in an emergency. The A2 front sight could be left on and the angle sights could be installed, but that would look lame, plus on your rifle it looks like rail space might be a problem if you were to install a scope and new front and rear angle sights.
There are all sorts of possibilities but for me the folding rear sight fits my needs.

Unless you have a Larue Scope Mount that is Quick Disconnect... but good point for most people!

RP91, I have the Mark AR 3-9X in a Burris PEPR on my gun. There is .730 or almost 3/4" between the top of the rail and the bottom of the scope. So if your BUIS is less than 3/4" high it will clear. The edge of the scope is mounted even with the charging handle on my gun and the eye relief is right on for me.

Thank ya'll for the replies. They have been very helpful. Well, I went to Cabela's the day after christmas and bought a........Nikon M223 Scope mount. What? That's right, I picked the Nikon mount over the P.E.P.R mount. I got to hold them both in my hand, and after a long time of self-reflection and deep, clear thought (like that is possible in Cabela's on Dec. 26th, lol) I decided on the M223 mount. It cost $10 less and was a TON lighter compared to the PEPR. Got home and immediately put it on my Sport. Fixed both of my problems and kept my rifle relatively light weight. Best $70 I have spent on my rifle so far. Now, if I can only find my MBUS...
