I bought mine without the thumb safety, without the magazine disconnect, and without the internal lock----and with Tritium night sights. For me, its perfect the way it is.
I would think the grip safety could be added later----it seems to me the frame is slightly indexed where the safety would go on mine. I believe I would want the factory to do it....at least for warranty reasons. It sounds to me like a question for S&W.

Buy the M&P the way it was originally designed.
NO internal lock. NO magazine disconnect. And DEFINITELY NO EXTERNAL SAFETY.
All three are useless. The pistol is plenty safe without them unless you are unsafe.

I've read elsewhere here that a non thumb safety CANNOT be retrofitted with one, per S&W. Personally, I found the trigger on the S&W M&P I shot to be too light (IMO) for carry without a safety. I still prefer my Glocks, where I can set the trigger pull myself by changing out springs and connectors, which is not possible on the M&P's. As much as I like the S&W name, I'll be sticking with my Glocks for pistols.

I bought the M&P45c without thumb safety, without mag disconnect and without internal lock...that's what works best for me for a carry gun. Of course, it is always carried in a holster.
I have found my M&P to be extremely accurate and very pleasant to shoot. It is "death ray" accurate with the 230 HS, the old stand by, so that's what it gets carried with.

I believe there are variants within the two general types? As in one could have a magazine safety, and not have a thumb safety, etc., etc. With each variant carrying it's own SKU number.

Buy one with the MA trigger. 10lbs. pull. Personally the only one of the three safety systems offered on the M&P that I like is the mag disconnect. It's an unobtrusive system that allows the pistol to be disabled quickly if need be.

My M&P45 has the external safety, no lock, no mag disconnect. As I understand the external safety was added only on the.45 so it would qualify for military trials to replace the 9mm in current use.

I've got one with the safety, got it mainly because I'm used to 1911's and I wanted a place to put my thumb.
Like berkbw, I find that the safety comes off ridiculously easy and I find the safety flipped off all the time just due to my normal movements throughout the day. I just flip it back on and don't worry about it. I don't need it for it's "safety" function anyway as I would never put my finger on the trigger until I'm ready to shoot.
I'd never want a heavier trigger pull just to make the gun "safer", which in this case really means "harder to shoot". I find the stock trigger already too heavy and creepy and plan to send the gun to Burwell soon for a trigger job. Otherwise, the gun is great and I love it.

The thumb safety seems too easy to slide off accidentally to have any additional effect. If you don't like the light trigger pull of the M&P try looking at a SW99. It has a DA/SA operation like a traditional hammer fired pistol, but with a striker.
I bought the M&P45 with the Thumb safety and had gunsmith David Bowie lighten and smooth the trigger. Thus I have something similar to the 1911.
I shot stock M&P45s and their triggers were long, heavy, and gritty and they did not shoot nearly as tight groups as other guns I was shooting at the time (H&K USP 40, Glock 19 & Kimber Warrior). However, once I got the one with the trigger job, it shot better than the other handguns mentioned.
Since the trigger job results in a significantly lighter trigger (like 4.5) with almost no pre-travel, the thumb safety seemed to me to be the way to go.

I had one of each, 45 with and without thumb safeties, neither had the magazine disconnect. I eventually decided that the safety was unnecessary (I kept the triggers stock), so I sold the 45 w/ the thumb safety and bought a second without it (but with the magazine disconnect) for duty use.
FWIW, the M&P45 is not available with the internal lock (thankfully), everyone that owns any M&P45 has one without the lock. Unlike the 9/40/357 versions, the 45 frame doesn't have a spot for the lock to go.

Interestingly, on the S&W Web Page, the M&P .45's are not listed under the pull-down menu for "select model" (all other M&P's are). However, the various M&P .45 models can be found under the pull-down menu for "select caliber" under .45 -- on the last page of listed handguns.
