Okay, so, recently I have been experiencing some issues with my May 2013 production M&P9 FS, and from the looks of it I am not the only one.
I wanted to make this thread to give a run down of what has been going on and my experience with S&W CS.
So, I purchased the gun a couple months back and immediately noticed that the followers on the 2 included magazine were not being engaged by the inside "tab" of the slide catch assembly.
I assumed this was an issue of out of spec followers so I had S&W send me a handful of new ones. Lo and behold, they were exactly the same and nothing changed.
I called S&W and they send me a shipping label on the house, which is great and all, but still, I'd rather not have this issue happen to begin with.
I explained the problem to them and after sending the pistol and 2 mags to them they returned it after a couple weeks with a note saying they "changed the followers and performed a function test" and that it was good to go.
That's where things get interesting. I noticed that they didn't just change the followers, they changed the entire magazines. The mags that came with the pistol had the base-plates with square detents on them. However, when it was returned they had base-plates with the older style ROUND detent on it, AND the follower was NOT marked "9" like the previous one.
I spoke with a CS rep and they told me that S&W actually went from the round detent base-plate, to the square one, and back to the round one. Has anyone else heard this?
On top of this, I took both of the new magazines apart and noticed the spring had a metric butt-load of excess material. I'm pretty sure that this is not normal.
The worse part is, I can only load 16 rounds into the magazine, no matter how hard I try. And I am reluctant to start trimming the spring.
So, I let CS know about this as well, and they're sending me two new magazine springs. Hopefully these wont be all goofy and retarded.
Okay, next part of the story. I just picked up 3 17-round magazines from Midway and noticed they all were the square detent models and they all experienced the same issue of the magazine follower bypassing the slide catch assembly.
This is where my patience wore thin, but I gave S&W the benefit of the doubt and assumed it may have been a bad run of mags, followers, idk.. They are sending me 3 more followers (hopefully the right freakin' ones this time) and 3 new round detent base-plates.
I also had them send me a new slide-catch assembly to be safe, but something tells me that isn't the issue. But I greatly appreciate their efforts and picking up the pill, especially when I told them none of my Glocks and HKs had these issues.
Don't get me wrong, I love the M&P and the function has been flawless, except for this issue that results in empty mags not always dropping freely. But it's bad enough when I have to contact CS on any gun, especially when it's AFTER they fail to fix the issue.
So here are the pics to better illustrate the issue:
Here is what the followers that came with the gun (and recently from Midway) looked like. As you can see, the slide-catch tab does not engage the "shelf" on the follower, rather it rides up on the side of the follower:
They had the square detent, that I mentioned:
And the mag spring looks normal:
Now, here is what the two NEW mags look like that Smith & Wesson returned to me with the pistol:
Notice the broader contact surface on the follower where the slide-catch tab engages. Also, no "9" on the follower either:
As I said, according to the S&W rep they went BACK to the old style base-plate. Here is what the new mags came with:
However, the new mags that seem to function great can only hold 16 rounds due to all this extra spring. I'm pretty sure this isn't normal (I have since found out these are probably NJ compliant mag springs, which pisses me off even more that S&W CS made that mistake since I'm in AZ):
Let me know what you guys think and if you've had similar experiences.
I am giving S&W one more chance to fix this issue, and if they fail to take care of it this time or at least tell me what is going on I am not going to be happy.
