I'm left-handed. While practicing draws I notice that on a few occasions I have accidentally hit the mag release so that the mag comes loose. The release is of course on the left-hand side. It seems like this wouldn't be an issue for a right-hander. Should I consider switching the release from the left to the right side, or is this an issue of training (i.e. getting used to the gun)? I've been used to releases being on the left side but this is the first time I've used the 9C as a carry. I'd hate to release the mag by mistake when I need it.

Also, does it void the warranty if I have a gunsmith do this, or does it need to go to Smith?

On the MP series the magazine release is reversible. There is no warranty issue by reversing it. In the “Dark Ages” when I first starting shooting there was no concern in regards to ambidextrous design. The world was right handed and that’s the way it was. Adapt, improvise and over come was and is the left handed individual’s dilemma. That said there are weapons that are not ambidextrous compatible. You may want to learn to handle the weapon the way it is.

On the M&P series it is very easy to do.

First make sure gun is unloaded and lock slide to rear. drop the magazine, lower sear disconnector, rotate the slide lever and release the slide and remove it.

With the bare frame in-hand look down into the magwell from above. You will see what looks like a paperclip sized wire retaining the mag release button. Simply unhook the wire, a simple flat blade screwdriver works fine, and remove the button from the side that it sticks out from currently. Insert the button into the side you want it on tail-end first. re-attach the wire and reassemble gun..easy!

It is as easy as FOMO describes. I'm a lefty and switched the mag release on my M&P to the right side of the pistol.

I moved my mag release to the right side due to the fact that I have smaller hands or maybe just short thumbs. For me having it on the right side is perfect, I can use my trigger finger to drop the mag. Only bad thing is if I bang up against something hard when carrying in my IWB holster the mag pops loose.

Thanks for the info on how to switch the sides, guys. THat was so easy that even I could do it!

I switched the mag release to the right side. I love the M&P because they adjust to a lefty. The process is really simple and the instructions are available in the manual. Takes about 5 minutes.
