M&Ps without rails?

sorry i was inclined to post something to try and help...i used to work on my RC's alot so im used to "fixing" things i dont prefer. it takes practice practice practice

Just kidding you...

Seriously, though, my efforts with hand tools don't always produce the best results. I'd be too nervous to try a frame modification unless I had a lot of trial runs first. I don't know how I'd do that with an M&P...so, if I do decide to try removing the rail, I'll have to send it off to a professional.

Tell me about it. While taking a welding class in college in 1955 I inadvertently welded a slag hammer to an iron work table. I'll see your execrable and raise you two abysmals. :D

I only own revolvers now, but I don't like the look of rails on pistols. I can see why some people want to mount flashlights on bedside home defense guns.

I don't use the rail on either of my m&p 9's, but I do like that they are there. I don't understand why people are opposed to them. I even like the m&p R8 BECAUSE of the rails.

After seeing Clint's video on proper flashlight usage, I have little use for rails. I was all in favor of them at first, but in actual usage, I find a light on my carry gun like. . . never.

I think the best approach is to put a light on a home gun for night use, but for concealed carry, the pistol is narrower for IWB carry without the rail.

So, I would not mind a version without a rail, but it will NEVER happen as most people will feel the same way about rails as they used to about a 38 Special, which is, "why get a 38 Model 10 when you can get a .357 Magnum Model 13 and fire either round." It took a while, but the Model 10 survives, and the Model 13 is history. That said, anything less "tactical" is not a good seller, so don't hold your breath. Maybe you could get someone like Robar to remove the rails.

I don't know I don't really like the rail but it doesn't bother me at the same time. I just accept that it is part of the pistol. I suppose if the M&P didn't come with a rail maybe then I would probally want one.

I think M&P's are a good looking pistol, more character than a glock not as much class as a 1911 or 3rd Gen but good looking none the less.

Right! Why buy 2 M&Ps when one can do both jobs.

There two reasons why I don't like them:

1) I never have and never will put a light/laser on the front end of any of my handguns. I have a much larger, heavier, metal-body flashlight ready on the nightstand, which I find much more useful, and can even be used as a club if necessary.

2) Since I won't use the rail, I find it unnecessary, and more than that, I think it detracts from the appearance of the gun. Yes, function is primary...but I also enjoy the way my favorite guns look. That's why I was so glad to see the Shield come without a rail. That's why I bought a SIG P228 (it didn't have a rail.) Of all the 1911s I have owned (20 at last count) only two had a rail: a SIG (which I bought because it was a limited edition) and a Springfield Champion Operator. I didn't keep either one, and I won't buy another 1911 with a rail...that's just wrong.

So far I have no need of a rail but someday I might want to mount something to it in the future so I'm glad it's there. What has stopped me from adding a flashlight or laser is the fact I'd need to get holsters that would accommodate them. When using the M&P for nighttime home defense I'd rather use my regular handheld LED flashlight because to use it on a firearm means I'd have to sweep it on the subject whether it be my wife, daughter or grandson.

As far as appearance goes there are so many handguns with rails that it almost looks unusual without one. If I got a 1911 I'd want it to look like a 1911 & that means railess. With a rail I at least have the option of adding something to attach to it if I wanted to or ever felt the need. At this time there's a possibility of getting a laser/flashlight combination from a friend free of charge. I can't say I'd ever use it but I want that option.

Well...an M&P is prettier than a Glock! I guess being the prettiest of the pigs isn't all that much of an accomplishment, though....

Now this is some funny stuff. LOL. As for rails...I can take'em or leave'em.

Never really thought about it that much. Hmmm.

Let's remember that the M&P stands for Military and Police as such they have been fitted with the items that police and military want or need and that includes rails. I never gave them a thought aesthetically but I can appreciate your view. To me it's part of the Military and Police mystique that I like about M&Ps.

YMMV

So, maybe they need to come out with a "C" model..."C" for civilian (or cranky, as my wife calls me...personally, I don't see it myself.) :p

I think that would get confusing with the compact versions. I mean, it says M&P9c on the slide of my 9mm compact...

I don't care for rails, either, but the M&P's here fit a holster I already had anyway, so WTH.... (I'd planned on buying a new holster to fit the first M&P - a 40FS, but it turned out to be a good fit for one I had for an XD9SC.)

I don't like the way rail-mounted lasers work anyway, and haven't got a bayonet. I was trained to use a flashlight in my weak hand anyway....

(I have an old 4" M10HB, btw. The Magnum version would have been a little better, but the price was right. It compliments a 6" M19 Combat Magnum, and is also concealable :D. The PD I worked with - not for - didn't want to hear about .357 loads. I had some, and had some fun with them, but on-duty could only carry .38's anyway.)

I have an RIA 1911 with rails, too. "Tactical" of some kind. I won it, so I couldn't ask for something else. The extra weight up front - and a FLGR - makes for a lot more weight, and a lot more stability, but it's really just a range gun for me. I can get away with a full sized 1911 easily enough, but that RIA is just a bridge too far for more than a few minutes.

Regards,

I dont know, a rail has its uses. What we need is a cup holder that fits the rail. Now that would be something. mini vans are sold on the number of cup holders the have. My Caravan had 10. A cup holder for my 9FS would be perfect when we are out in the woods plinking. Need a place to hold the beer during a 2 handed stance. :D:p:rolleyes:

I have no opinion one way or the other about the looks of the rails because they don't bother me.I would however like to point out that in my opinion the M&P fits nicely in my hand and feels well balanced,so if you were to have material removed it may affect the over all balance of how it feels and shoots.I think that when they designed it they modified the frame appropriately for the balance the weapon.

Good point. :)

I prefer steel & aluminum framed guns without rails. IMO, poly guns are working guns so I actually prefer rails on them weather I use them or not. I do however use them on my HD pistol and on carry guns like my XDS with a Insight XML as a nightstand gun when traveling. They really don't get in the way of anything so removing them would be for aesthetic purposes only and would more than likely effect resale value.
