M27-2 Factory Refinish & Action Job

This one came back to me in November, but I hadn't gotten around to taking photos until today.

To recap, it had finish issues (not terrible, but not what I wanted in a 5" M27) and a real bubba action job. There was a hitch in the action that I always hated. It also had some modern laminate stocks on it when I found it also. It went back to S&W wearing the correct but not original M27-3 magna's.

Now it's so nice, I'm not sure I can bring myself to shoot it. The action is exactly what I expected. Fantastic on both double & single action. I've sent three other guns back for the Master Action package & was extremely happy with the work.

So here are some photos finally. To me, the finish is perfect. I put some grashorn elk on it when it came back.

That's a real nice 27. I did the same thing with a model 19 2 1/2". It was originally blue with a regular hammer and trigger. I carried it a lot as an investigator and got a lot of finish wear as a result. I had an action job done on it after I had the target hammer and trigger installed. I sent it to Smith over 15 years ago and had it nickeled, added some Grashorn stags and a shiny Tyler-T grip and haven't shot it since. That gun got me out of more than one tight spot. Now I just get it out and oil it a little and just look at it. I've got a 2 1/2" 66-1 with a smooth target hammer and target trigger if I want to shoot or carry something like that. Jr. knows to keep both of those when I'm gone.

I have two other guns that I want to send back for action work. And after seeing this refinish, I'd like to send my M10 back for a refinish

In my observations, the much maligned current factory blue refinishes are more black than the blue-black of the older processes, but if the underlying polish job and metal work are good the guns turn out really nice, as this one did. Enjoy!

I agree, the older style blue was replaced by a black finish I guess around 20 years ago, the carbonia type blue came to an end in the late 1970's.

I see from their website S&W charges $275 for the "High Bright Polish" and $220 for the "Standard Polish and Blue".

Sounds very competitive. Seems like most people would spring the extra 55 bucks for the high polish.

I'm happy to share the price, but I'll have to find the paperwork at home for it.

Also, just to clarify on the length of time it took. Both guns were shipped off January 2020. Then well...2020 happened. The Performance Center had to shut down at least twice that I know of. The Mountain Gun came back first as it was only an action job. This 27 came back to me in early November before I went hunting.

As far as I'm concerned, S&W did a great job on both guns. customer service was never lacking. I'd do more work like this again anytime.

I like all three stocks, but I'm partial to elk. Maybe because I'm a Montana kid & love elk hunting. It's wearing elk on it now.

Very nice 27. I plan to ship a 28 off to Fords for a finish job. Nickel with gold accents has to go, a new brushed blue finished applied and restore roll marks and lettering if needed
