I just acquired the subject 5" gun from a gent I sold it to in 1994. It is missing the original rear sight and I am trying to find one. Can someone please advise what the blade height should be? Also, what style should the original front sight be and what height? Appreciated.

Mine has a rear blade with a .10 inch deep notch. The front sight is a .30 inch high black ramp.

I am not sure how front sight height is defined. So I measured it from the top of the barrel and did not include the portion of the sight that cannot be seen when it is installed.

This should look familiar:

Thanks. What is the rear blade height measured from the top of the sight base to the top of the blade? The amount the rear blade rises from the rear sight?

I love mine

Presuming the front sight is original, Smith and Wesson can simply ship you the correct replacement rear sight.

They already know which one you need, just call them. Have the serial number handy, it will make their parts lookup easier

They no longer carry the rear sight. Can you measure yours for me?
I did not pay attention that you sold it in 94, which would make it a pre-D&T frame gun. I was figuring you had one of the more common D&T 610s which use the same sight assembly as today's revolvers

I will be happy to measure mine, however I will not be close to my 5" until the second week of next month.

I do have my 6 1/2" with me but it may or may not be the same height rear blade.

Boxhead,
I am guessing that the fellow you sold the revolver to had a scope mounted on it, correct?

If the Gunsmith that did the work failed to return the original rear sight, perhaps your friend recalls who did the work so you might give the Gunsmith a call and see if the sight is still in his parts inventory. I know it is a long shot

The old style square ended tang S&W rear sights are nearly impossible to find these days.
steamloco76 you must be looking in the wrong places.

After reading your post, I went and did a search on eBay. In my 1st search, the 1st page of a 4 page result came up with 7 old style square ended tang Smith & Wesson rear sight assemblies for sale. They were priced from $55 and up

Now I did not read the body of the offerings to see what they came off of, but they are out there and thanks to the Internet they are easy to find.

No, he swapped a Millett for the original. No drill/tap. I just need the blade height dimension so I can land one on ebay.

The rear is .4 or .3 inch depending on what you mean by sight base. I bought mine in the early 90s. While I had to send my 69 back because it always shot a little high with heavy loads my 610 had to be cranked pretty far up.

Boxhead,
I am wondering if we have a communication problem. Your quest reads a bit differently in different posts.

Are you missing the entire rear sight assembly? That would be the sight base, sight blade, windage screw and nut.

Or do you just need a rear sight blade to replace a Millett blade that is mounted to a S&W base?

My cousin called me from the Family vacation house tonight, so I had him access my safe and measure my 5" 610. Mine is wearing a .146 rear blade.

If the blade is all you need, it is $11 directly from Smith and Wesson
Product: .146 Blue Rear Sight Blade Kit

If you need an entire assemble, you can buy an assemble with ANY height blade and put a fresh blade in it. So take price into account when looking. It may be cheaper to do both.
