I am not sure if this question belongs here or in 1980-present...

But, I think I have been smitten by my next affliction, an m627.

I see one in the classifieds here that has a full underlug and a non-fluted cylinder. Being a recent adopter of an m28-2 I have grown to really enjoy the N-frame 357.

I am smitten with the one in the classifieds here but it is way out of my price range.

My question is: can anyone give me the specifics of what m627's had the full underlug in terms of dash number and/or special models? Also, how about full underlug and fluted cylinder? Are they all rare? I sure hope not because I would love for one to be the next Smith to join my family and I just can't afford 2g's for a handgun....

Thank you. :)

Yes I am. I was wondering if the underlug is exclusive to that 627-0 or not.

And I don't recall the sellers name, but if that is you I mean no offense by mentioning the price asked for it. I am sure the price is appropriate for what it is... it is just out of my reach. I really wish it wasn't because I think I'm in love! LOL! It's a beautiful revolver.

We need some pictures....

The 627-0 is the only one like it.

Full checkered top strap, not the light laser scrape of today, full N frame model 27 goodness in stainless with the full underlug and unfluted cylinder.

I have one in my hand right now, bought it new in '89. Full power heavy .357's feel like 38Spl - well sort of. These do suck up the recoil.

IMO, these are the very best of the 627 line - bar none.

Thank you both for the pics, and yes that is exactly what I am talking about.

I can only imagine the degree of smoothness they fire 357's downrange. I recently picked up a 28-2 with a 6" tube and was surprised to find it to be a smoother shooter than a 6" 686. So, knowing my HP has a pencil bbl and just a shrouded extractor as apposed to that 627-0 with its full lug...well, you can imagine why my interest is piqued.

So, I take it they only came with a non-fluted cylinder then..

And here is the $64,000 question for me: Is there any hope of finding one that is comparable in price to say a 629 Classic of the same vintage??

I swear I was born about 50 years too late......

Supply / demand.

They made SO many more 29 & 629 44 mag Classics that you'll commonly find one for sale.

What the didn't make many of is the 627-0. Those are what the market will bare.

I had no idea they were going for north of 2k!

So I guess you'll have to search pawn shops and other out of the way places to find one that's suitably unrecognized for its real value.

Finding one on a gun forum where knowledgeable sorts hang out - not so much.

I know what you mean on getting hung up on the full underlug 627. I have been chasing them for 15 years. I originally wanted a 5 inch fluted cylinder 627 that I had seen or read about. I have never been able to buy one and have only seen a couple for sale. I was either too late or too short funded, and that was way back in the last century.
Back around 1988, about 254 627s were made with 5 1/2 inch full underlug barrel and unfluted cylinders. Then another 5200 or so were made with longer cylinder stop notches and a new cylinder stop. These were stamped 627-0. All of these had the checkered top straps like all previous N frame .357 magnums. Later, some 627-2's and some -3s were made with 6 shot unfluted cylinders and 6 inch and 5 inch barrels. The checkered top straps were omitted on these. My estimation from what I have seen for sale is that here were a lot more 627-0s made than the later full underlug 627-2 and -3 models.
Prices on the 627-0 have been going up drastically in the last year or so. There have been two nice ones for sale on Gunbroker lately for around $1850, and have not been selling. This is about $500 higher than those selling just a short time ago. I think the one advertised for sale here is way too high and has been for sale quit a while, so I guess I'm not the only one with that opinion, although it is a real nice specimen.

It will take some work, but I think you will be able to find a nice shooter grade on for less than $1500, but it might take awhile.

I think you will really like it when you find one.

Thanks to all of you for taking the time to fill in the gaps for me.

Sounds like a 627-0 is going to be out of my reach unless I find that once in a lifetime steal, or my financial situation changes drastically. ;)

I am a new fan of the N-frame 357 since my purchase of a very nice 28-2. But I would sure love to own a "pretty" one someday. ;)

That 627-0 would pair up nicely with my 629 Classic... I guess it's just another addition to the list of "I wants"

627-0

I agree 100% with Nightowl. The sellers you're seeing on GB are looking for the most impatient fool with the deepest pockets. Unfortunately there are a lot of impatient buyers with deep pockets, and these sellers aren't in any rush to get the gun sold.

What you need to locate is a motivated seller, who will price it in a more realistic realm of less than $1,500. I would be surprised if you could find one in high condition with the box and all for much less than $1,400, however.

It's a limited production gun (not truly rare though), that's the problem. It's a very cool and unique one that is worth having though. You'll be the only one shooting this model at the local range, that's for sure!
