I am waiting for my CCW and am wondering what the procedure is in Massachusetts if you are pulled over for a traffic violation. Are you legally obliged to tell the Officer that you have a CCW and are carrying? Any help appreciated. I did a google search, but could not seem to find this information. Thanks

Cheryl, pending a response from some of our brothers from the Bay state, oftentimes such information is available on state police websites of a given state. If that fails, check the Massachusetts Attorney General's site.

Im from MA and I often think of it when Im driving. I think (my opinion) it would be wise to inform them, only because when they run your info and it comes back that you have a CCW and you didnt inform them, youre going to get the safety speech and if theyre not very friendly maybe more... Its a toss up... Id call the local dept and see what they recommend.

Leave your hands in plain sight on the steering wheel. Inform the officer that you have a CCW and are legally carrying. Then ask him how he would like you to proceed.

That info should have been provided by your instructor during your CCW class.

Thanks for the replies. They have helped very much. Will go to above site today.

Depicts, I found the answer to my question very quickly on the NEShooters forum as you said. Thanks so much. Looks like a place I can learn a lot!

NOT required by law in MA.

NOT advisable in the larger cities, as you may not enjoy the taste of asphalt in a "felony stop" if you mention it when NOT required.

In MA you are NOT usually requested to exit the car unless you are about to be arrested or given a sobriety check. Therefore, if you are truly CONCEALED and thus the gun is NOT going to be visible to the officers, I strongly suggest that you NOT mention it. MA officers are poorly trained on legal gun ownership and thus tend to think of gun owners as likely criminals, not law-abiding citizens.

NOT at all true!! A DL/Reg query is NOT tied to any LTC database in MA. It would take a special query to bring up that info and that is not normally done from a cruiser for a routine traffic stop.

NEVER ask a MA LEO for gun law advice!! They don't usually know the laws, but are oftentimes quick to "make something up".

That info should have been provided by your instructor during your CCW class.

Since there is no such legal requirement in MA, I'm unaware that many instructors cover this area. BTW: I am an NRA Instructor as well as a LEO for >25 years.

I've covered all this info on MA many times over on NortheastShooters.com's MA gun laws sub-forum.

Cheryl, if you are in Eastern MA you might want to attend some sessions with the Second Amendment Sisters. They meet at Braintree Rifle & Pistol Club www.brp.org on the 3rd Saturday of each month (but not in August). Contact Nicole at [email protected] for a lot more info and tell her Len sent you.

ETA: DOH! I don't usually read people's tag lines. Didn't realize that you are already a member of SAS (and NES). Therefore I think that we have met or at least talked at BR&P. I'm one of the ROs on duty when SAS is there. I'm not deleting the info above, as someone else may benefit from it.
