Mag holder for IDPA - what's best?

I've been shooting PPC and don't use a mag holder as my pocket is fine.

Shot my first (of many to come I'm sure) IDPA matches and I need something better to hold my magazines.

I'm shooting an XDm and a MP9 using the XD Gear (holster and mag carrier). The SW mags fit but it's a tad tight fit (with the XD too) and it holds 2, not 3 mags and for one of the stages that was an issue (multiple reloads with retention).

So what's good, popular, etc??

IDPA requires only 2 magazines on your person and one in the gun. So...any double pouch will do a great job for you....I like good leather pouches when possible, but will use kydex if my magazines don't fit the leather pouches.

I prefer Kydex mag pouches and holsters. Blade-tech or Comp-Tac are very popular with the local IDPA crowd. Ready tactical has a large following.

Mag Holders

I'm no XPert but this is what I do. I have a Kydex double mag holder which works either paddle of on the belt. It's adjustable so I was able to adjust it to my magazines. It will take about any double stack magazine in 9 mm-45 caliber. I wear Wrangler cargo shorts or long pants with the smaller open pocket on the left leg which is where I put my first magazine with 11 rounds for most stages. the other two are loaded to 10 rounds. On stages where we download to say six rounds I still use the same logic, with my first mag in the leg pocket, second in the forward slot of the mag holder, and third mag in the back slot. I have 9 magazines for my M&P so that I'm not continually reloading between stages. One magazine is marked with a "11" on the base so I don't confuse myself. (easily done at my age) LOL My first couple of matches last summer I just kept spares in my pocket. The mag carrier will in most cases allow you to perform reloads a little faster. Sometimes you are required to reload with retention and it's nice having that empty pocket just below the mag carrier to dump that mag in. just my 2 cents, YMMV

I've been using a FOBUS paddle double mag carriers for a few years. I have one for my Glock 17 (for SSP) and my RIA 1911A1 Match (for CDP). The price isn't bad and they work well.

I run a double mag pouch by Blade Tech for al my IDPA guns. That said if I was doing it all over again I would go with two singles to open up the separation a bit. The doubles work well though. Both Blade Tech and Comp Tac are the two mostr popular brands from what you see reported at the US Nationals.

I like Comp Tac singles also. The separation between the mags helps with the extended base pad on the standare M&P9 mags.
