hi guys new to the forums, just picked up a m&p15-22 and i must say its a fun gun to shoot. My only problem is that when i shoot the last round the bolt doesnt stay back and i always dry fire. Any ideas on what that could be? i was shooting cci mini mags through it, first time shooting it and it happened everytime.

yes i can get it to stay open with mag in before i start shooting, but it wont stay back when im firing the last round, and yes it has happened all times when i shot (only emptied the mag about 5 times but did it all 5 times). I only have the one mag that came with it but i plan on ordering more.

I have a very similar problem but haven't made a thread yet. newer DUR model. I have three different mags, and have the last-shot hold open fail about 20% of the time. The charging handle works perfectly fine, but sometimes after firing the last round, the feel i get in the trigger is completely different - it will feel just like i still have a round left in there. Other times it functions properly I know right away because of the position change in the trigger, and the noise from it locking. I haven't narrowed the problem down to any one mag yet either. needless to say it is always obvious when it does work, not obvious when it doesn't. I also only can load a max of 6 rounds per mag per local range rules, so it isn't from stuffing 25 rounds in a mag either. Mags are all new never taken apart, one that came with the gun and two of the newer revision from midwayusa about a month ago, all three look identical so i'm assuming there are all the newer fixed versions too. also with cci minimag. brand new gun only 200 rds fired so far.

I went to a range somewhere outside of Detroit that had that dumb 6 round rule. It was so annoying. I cant remember the range, but if its the one you go to it has a LONG walk to the range from the club house down a sidewalk.

yep that would be it, it is right next to brighton which i would consider the suburbs area, a safe distance from detroit. I'm glad i'm not the only one that thinks it is stupid.. and i hope all ranges aren't like that. The nice thing about it though is the 25 / 50 / 100 yard targets. and only $7 for the whole day, not per hour.

This is cause by one of three things first is a mag problem the orange follower can be damaged and that is what activates the bolt hold open next is grit in behind the bolt release... if you can feel any grit in it when you depress it then it needs to be cleaned a can of wd40 and a can of air works well for get trash out of tight places.. and last but not least.. weak ammo - just because the gun fire and cycles doesn't mean the bolt is going all the way back and at almost its most rearward position is where the bolt hold open enguages... check all and enjoy it from now on

is that part on the bolt with the little metal hook that comes around the right side to the front?

I had a similar experience on my new 15-22 the first time I shot it. My 10 rounder that came with the gun wouldn't hold the bolt open for the first 3 loads. After that, it functioned perfectly, and hasn't done it since. The other mags I bought didn't do this at all, only one of the three. After 1000 rounds now, everything is fine with the last round hold open on any mag.

grimreaper, I think you are referring to the extractor on the right side of the bolt. Belt Fed is referring to the bolt release which is on the left side of the lower receiver.

Ohhh interesting, well I don't think there's any problem with the bolt release as it is basically brand new and the problem started happening within the first 50 rounds fired. Magazines are all undamaged also. Guess that leaves ammo the cuplrit and we both used the same thing. Do I want higher or lower velocity ammo or is that irrelevant to the load

Being new isn't the issue. Sometimes there are manufacturing "leftovers" in there - some bits of plastic or whatever. I found some in my lower the first time I opened it.

I went to the range today and shot 400 rounds of CCI Minimags / Blazers. Out of 20 mags, 3 mags did not hold the bolt open. This never happened to me before, I dry fired one shot by accident.

What damage can be done with dryfiring this rifle ?
Where can I see the physical damage ?

As far as I can tell, the 15-22 doesn't have any issues with dry firing. I've dry fired mine quite a bit without any problems. Firing pin doesn't seem to contact the chamber at all. Can anyone else verify this?

Copied directly from the PDF off the S&W website...

Caution: Never dry-fire the rifle as damage
to the firearm could result.

Just saying, I've done it a few times myself before I re-read the manual more in depth. I'm sure it's fine to do, but why risk damaging the firing pin?
