How would magna porting affect the value of a 629-4 with a four in barrel? The gun is in perfect condition, and I would have bought it in a second, but wanted to check with you guys first. Thanks

Stay away from magna porting. It's throws stuff up and dirty's up the front sight. The recoil saving ports IMHO doesn't work. Lead bullets can lead up the ports and throw off your poi.

It looks cool otherwise.

Just my opinion, but as to how it will effect the value is as follows:
Take the asking price of the gun, subtract the cost of a new barrel, installation costs, refinishing if needed, and a reasonable amount for the time that you don't have the gun while it is being worked on and you arrive at the value.
Seriously though, I would not buy a gun that has been magnaported unless I could get a SUBSTANTIAL discount. The first gun I fired that was magnaported was a 4" nickle 29-2 with full house loads. The muzzle blast was unpleasent, even with muffs on. The nickle plating around the magnaported portion of the barrel was starting to flake and it discolored the front sight. Also, didn't really notice that much of a difference in muzzle jump or recoil.

Your computation is much like the one I use to describe a 'sporterized' military rifle. In the case of a sporterized 1903, you take a 600.00 rifle, put another 250.00 into it and end up with a 350.00 rifle.

Probably not much different with mag-na-porting.

I am so glad I didn't buy it. Now i know why I never had one. I am very glad I ran this by you folks. Thank you

This thread makes me sad. I bought a 29-4 unfluted cylinder 3" for $400. It's in 98% condition, but no box, and it is magna-ported. Did I pay too much?

Not in my opinion! Do you like it? Do you shoot it? I love 29's, probably not objective, but who that matters cares? If you like it and it shoots good, it's good. If it bothers you, would you like your $400 back, send pictures.

I love it! With 185's it's a pussycat. 240's rock a little, but I have a .44 Automag and a Wildey so it's really no big deal. Something about a 3" .44 Mag. It just looks right.

Of course, what was the price? Don't like it, don't see a need, but love 4" 29's, if the price is right, I am a sucker!

I suppose someone has to be the sucker. Thanks for volunteering.
