Magtech 158 gr SJSP .357 mag

Made in Brazil. I got one box at a pawn shop. Price was $ 22 for a box of 50. The bullet looks flat in the frontend. ANyone have tried this brand ? The Magtech website says the velocity is around 1230 ft /sec in a 4 inch barrel.

Then they have the American Eagle Brand as well. Its the same, 158 gr JSP for $22 /box.

I went for the Magtech just to try it out. I hope this is a cleaner burning powder they ve used.


Now i saw they also have the proven Remington 125 gr SJHP in the green box. It was priced $40 for a box of 50. I passed for now , im might try those later . Its just kind of high for me .

Sir, FWIW, I've shot a lot of MagTech in various calibers--it's the "house ammo" at many of the local indoor ranges. The .357 158-grain JSP load seems good. I haven't ever chronographed it or shot water jugs or anything like that, but it's reliable, accurate, clean, and definitely lets you know you're shooting a magnum. The brass is good for reloading as well.

Magtech is very common here in Houston. It is the main range ammo at several of the local ranges including mine. I have shot a bit of it and found that it lives up to its billing.

The brass is reasonable. I get a lot of it free and keep in sorted. You will find that they use several different head stamps or it has varied over the years.

All in all I think it is decent stuff and reload it often.

I've shot a good amount of Magtech ammo over the years and it's good ammo, especially for the price. The brass is also good for reloading too.

I bought some in .38 special as it was the only non plus P I could find to shot in older J frames.
I thought it to be good stuff and carry it now in a couple CCWs.
I've not tries other calibers yet though.

I have actually taken two deer with that load out of a 6 inch 686. It is quite effective at reasonable range with good penetration. Never a FTF out of the 686 no dash but did have a few FTF's out of a 60-15 before I put an extended firing pin in it. But Federal HS never failed in this model 60. That leads me to believe the Magtech has tough primers. In a gun that punches them hard, it is good stuff.

Enough to start a person reloading, isn't it?
I put it off all my life, until 2 years ago, when I needed a box of 45-70 for hunting. When I couldn't find any under $33 for 20 rounds that was the breaking straw! Today I load 45-70, 30-30, 38 & 357, 41 Mag, 44Spl & Mag and 45 Colt, and soon adding 45AR.
Factory ammo will never be 10 cents a round again, but it still is if you reload
My only regret is not starting 40 years ago, but, better late than never!
I have shot a lot of Magtech ammo and never a problem! Very high quality as far as i'm concerned.

I've used Magtech primers when reloading and didn't find them any harder than other primers I've used. BUT, every gun is different... (is it possible your firing pin was worn?)

Magtech is very affordable, very good ammo. AE is premium target ammo but I don't think you'll notice all that much difference between Magtech and AE for target shooting.

Brand new gun. Quite likely it was shipped with short firing pin as I understand is common these days. The longer C&S pin resolved the problem completely.

However the factory pin fired Federal without a single issue and with the Magtech, failed to fire 1-2 out of every 5, some after multiple strikes. Placed those same shells in the 686 and they ignited with no problems. Clearly there is some difference between Federal and Magtech primers.

I think Magtech ammo is pretty good. Their 38 Super averaged 1220 fps for me from a 1911 platform.

FWIW, I have a Sig 226 that I have never had a single issue with after several thousand rounds...until I shot a box of Magtech at the indoor range. Every single round failed to go into battery.

It was great for failure drills, but the bang, rack, bang, rack, etc. got annoying .

I still collected the brass because I figured it was a sizing problem and I can fix that. No news on any revolver ammo.

I would shoot it in my revolver, but never my semi-autos again.

Sir, sounds like you just got a bad box. I've shot a couple thousand rounds of MagTech .45 ACP and 9mm with no problems. This was in several different 1911s, a couple P226s, one P220, and a couple of Glocks.

Clearly there is some difference between Federal and Magtech primers.

Federal primers are the softest available that I'm aware of. So yes, there ought to be a difference.

I would buy the Federal American Eagle Brand over Magtech every time.
