I'm curious how often you should clean your pistol despite not being fired. I normally clean after every trip to range or 200rds, but I noticed tonight after removing my 6904 from it's holster I had marking on the slide. I didn't know what it was but I grabbed my bore cleaner all the same and began scrubbing, what came off was orange in color, so I'm guessing residual rust. Broke it down all the way and cleaned and oiled everything, only got orange off the outside of the slide, nothing else.

It's been roughly a month since I last cleaned it, so once a week for cleaning? I'm also thinking my slide might need to be re-blued.

cleaning

it is according to where you store the weapon. if it is in the safe or cabinet, just a periodic wipe down. if it is carried daily a wipe down everyday and clean out the dust. when i was working i carried a lw colt commander everyday and each night i would give it a wipe down and twice a year i would break down the frame to clean out the lint that accumalates, and ofcourse clean after each shooting session. you would be ammazed how many people never clean their guns.

I do carry it daily, doesnt take that long to clean it, will give me something to do at work I suppose. Need a better holster, the current one is polyester and collects lint like crazy, can't afford leather yet..

A holster is a poor place to store a gun. It can trap moisture and hold it against the gun causing rust, sometimes in a shockingly short period of time.

Wiped down and stored bare in a drawer, a handgun can be fine for months or even decades, even though it's wise to check it at least every few weeks. My carry gun is unholstered at the end of each day, given a quick wipe-down with a CLP-treated rag, and left unholstered until I strap it back on the next morning.

I do remove it at the end of the day, unload and set aside for that night, but I havnt wiped it down after each day. Will start doing that.

I only wipe down my carry guns once a month or so. And even then I am not that particular or consistent about doing it. I have been known to go several months without wiping them down and have never experienced any negative side effects. Of course my carry guns are all stainless. Blued guns may need a little more attention.

As far as you leather holster needs go, check out eBay. I have picked up numerous leather holster for CHEAP. Just make sure you search under several model numbers not just 6904 (as in 6904, 6906, 469, 669, 3913, 3914, etc.). Even search for the 5900 series (5903, 5906, 915, 5904 etc.) as there are a number of open bottom holsters that will fit any 9mm series but are listed for the 5900 series.

Ok.... odd thing is...
I cleaned the slide thoroughly last night, kept going until my white rag brought nothing off but the cleaner itself, I wiped it dry and applied rem oil, wiped dry again.
Went out today, just came back and it already has rust formed in the same spot on the slide... suggestions?

For haha's I took a metal rod and tapped the slide from edge to edge and the sound changed all the way down from higher to lower pitch, it should not do from what I know. Where the rust is forming there are finite pot marks in the metal where it looks like a knife was stuck in a fire and came out only not as extreme. Bluing is worn... but would re-bluing the slide prevent that rust from coming back?
