I've been lurking and doing my research and I'm going tomorrow to go put the 15-22 in my hands. I'm about 90% sure I'm going to choose the 15-22 over the Sig522. I've got a 15T right now and looking for a cheaper training platform. I'm still a little questionable on the reliability but the workings of the gun I believe has be convinced to stay with the same platform to maximize my training potential. I will admit if I had a 556 I would absolutely choose the 522.

I know my dealer had both the MOE version and the standard, and I'm leaning for the MOE do to the flip sights along with the flat top for the potential to add a Millet 1-4 scope down the road.

Any advice on MOE vs Standard?

I have the standard and definitely would have gotten the MOE if it was available at the time. Good on ya for taking the plunge. You will not be disappointed with this weapon. The MOE is worth it for the combined cost of purchasing the extras individually. Let us know how it works out for you.

i am looking at gettig the mp15 22.

what is magpul? is a plastic?

also, can flip up sights be added to the standard mp15-22

Magpul is a brand of accessories. They make stocks, grips, sights, covers, magazines (for 5.56 ARs), and other various items. Magpul is also their original product- a rubber loop to help 'pull mags' out of pouches.

Almost everything they make is plastic, meant to be lightweight and driven to be solutions to make the operation easier, or sometimes to just look cool. Most of their stuff costs a lot less than competitors as well.

Flip sights can be added. Several companies make them. The MOE/Magpul version and the Talo edition 15-22 both come with Magpul MBUS folding sights. All other 15-22s come with fixed sights that can be removed.

If it were available I would have gotten the MOE version over the regular. Another thing to remember about the older reviews is those reliability issues have been since fixed in the newer models. Also if you do have a problem S&W fully backs the gun and will fix it free and have even sent free mags to those who needed to get the updates.

Flip sights are often an unnecessary complication to a simple system. The front sight doesn't need to fold, the telescope looks around it (so to speak) and the rear is detachable. A folding rear sight may fit under a scope, but you still gotta pull the scope to use it.

A tall scope mount will eliminate the need to fold or remove either.

Buying the MOE will usually save a few bucks if you intend to buy those particular Magpul accessories anyway. However....

The 15-22 MOE comes with a Magpul MOE stock. A lot of folks buy the Magpul CTR stock because it has a friction lock which prevents the stock from rattling. The MOE stock has no friction lock.

The 15-22 MOE comes with Gen1 MBUS. However, Gen2 MBUS (smaller profile) should be coming out shortly.

The 15-22 MOE comes with MOE grip. I wouldn't have one on my rifle (personal opinion). The Hogue grip gets a lot of glowing reports here.

The MOE comes with QD Sling Swivel Attachment Point. Will you use it? If so, that's great.

With the MOE you may end up paying extra for stuff that isn't really what you would chose for upgrades.... but getting it at a discount price with the rifle.

My 15T

Here is my 15T for those who like pics.

Since it is payday today I'm hoping to grab a MOE today on the way up to the lake if the price is right. If not Ill have to wait til Monday and hit up my local dealer which is an hour in the wrong direction. I will surely post the pics when I get it. Along with the range report, I got a box of Federal Bulk waiting for it.

Its here w/ range report

Well I picked up the 15-22, and as everyone said here it was a blast to shoot. I'm going to wait to post pics until the upgrades come in. Right now its fixed sights with a threaded barrel and flash suppressor (stock). Did some checking around locally and prices were $549 to $440. I opted for the $440 and 2 extra mags at $18 a piece. A quick list of upgrades to closely match the big brother MP15T. Low profile rail covers, BAD lever, Ergo grip, MOE trigger guard, Leapers riser, and a BSA red dot.

I tried 2 ranges and one was closed and the other had a special event going on so I went home and played with the gun and decided I had to keep trying. I found a range and put about 350 of Federal 550 bulk pack through it. Absolutely no problems or hiccups. Range did not allow rapid fire so I didn't get a full clip through in record time but the double taps and triple taps went flawless. Out of the box it was great, a little high at 25yards and about 2 adjustments to the left. I left the height for when I try out the 50 yarder but it was windy and I was more interested in a function test than accuracy. (And I forgot my binoculars)

Final note, I think this was a much better investment than the small amount of .223 rounds I could of got for the same price. I think everyone that has gone this way for a tactical trainer is ahead of the curve, the latest report from the gun store is many large PD's have been placing orders for the 22 rifles to operate at reduced budgets.

Thanks to the local Cabela's I will be picking up a 100 rounds of .223 and 1,000 of .22 this week at employee pricing for supporting Independence Day and those who protect our Independence (LEO, Active Duty) I figure a box of 20 every couple range visits should keep the .223 happy.

i have a question about the mp 15-22. my ffl guy has one on order w/his source. they seem to have fixed stocks readily available, however, they are out of stock on the collapsable. i should point out i live in the country of CA. i have to also say that except for some restrictions vis-a-vis extended mags, and certain shooters, i kinda like my country.
now to my query, threaded barrel and accessoried mp 15-22. i can't seem to get a definite answer to ''are threaded barrels and the cosmetic 'flash hiders' on the mp 15-22 or ANY 22lr tactical conv rimfire [example: 10/22] CA compliant?'' if not, my next question is about the [glock/1911] ADVANTAGE ARMS 22lr replacement THREADED BARREL they manufacture AND sell in CA. what's the diff? it looks like the mp's is fixed or is it? the ADVANTAGE ARMS is removable.
the collapsable stock is ca compliant and only comes w/10rd mags and, according to my ffl guy- not the threaded barrel. none of the on-line research posts have broached this topic. and, if they have i've missed it.
