What sez you, and why?

Malt (chocolate, naturally) for me, without question. Can remember going to the Hygeia dairy in South Texas as a little kid during the summer. My aunt would take my cousins and me. It'd be hotter than... well, you know. It's gone now. But the memories will last forever.

I made many of both at Ashburn's Ice Cream in Dallas. A good high school job.

Chocolate malt... Vanilla shake for me.

Steak & Shake sells malts. Some of them very good--they used to offer a dark chocolate that was sinfully rich and delicious.

I rarely order such things anymore due to increasing lactose intolerance as I've gotten old, but I'll take a malt anytime. I like strawberry or vanilla better than chocolate except for that dark one.

Lactaid tablets work very well. I can eat ice cream again.

Reid's in Lockport, NY will make you a "Mountain Dew Cooler" (basically a Mtn. Dew milkshake)....It's crack for the taste buds!

I grew up in New York City in the 1940's - 1950's. They were called "malteds" back then and were actually made with malt - if you didn't want the malt, you'd just order a "milk shake". Using the words "malt" or "shake" would identify you as being from "the country", which basically meant anyplace west of the Hudson River or north of The Bronx!

I paid my dues for all those malteds of my youth with bypass surgery 2 years ago, but I still have one once or twice a year if I visit NYC.

We had a shop that made a great malt:

Chocolate Blue Bell Ice Cream
Chocolate syrup
Extra malt
Minimal milk

No whipped cream, cherry optional.

They are O.O.B. now but I can get one with less premium ice cream nearby.

Due to belt shrinkage, I really limit myself in this area.
