Man killed with own gun

I've told inquisitive people that the bulge under my shirt is a colostomy bag. That pretty much puts a lid on the conversation.

It's too bad they won't carry the conversation further. You could discuss the relative merits of a regular colostomy bag, a high capacity colostomy bag, and an assault colostomy bag. ;)

As far as my opinion, nobody should know you are armed. Only the witnesses to the death of the miscreant you had to shoot. It should never be pulled unless you intend to shoot. Playing policeman can end up getting you charged with brandishing in some jurisdictions.

Dang, a concealed carrier shot himself, who'd a thunk it.

Raleigh police: Man accidentally shoots himself at Crabtree Valley Mall

I saw that yesterday. I haven't checked any news sources since to see what the loud noise may have been.

My suspicion is the guy drew his gun, or tried to draw his gun, or most likely screwed up while trying to reholster his gun and shot himself in the leg.

People in a herd are stupid. I imagine it may have went down something like this:
- People hear a loud noise, panic and start run;
- Mr. Concealed Carry, also hearing the load noise, gets carried away and draws his handgun;
- He eventually realizes the load noise was a one and done thing and realizes there is not and in fact never was an imminent threat and decides to put his gun away before someone starts seeing him as the threat.

I'll go out on a limb here and suggest it was more likely than not one of the very popular striker fired pistols with no manual safety. If so, leaving your trigger finger inside the trigger guard under stress, or having a jacket drawstring cord lock or a wad of short or jacket intruding into the trigger guard can then defeat the trigger related safeties as he tries to shove it back in the holster.

Crabtree Valley Mall is posted as a gun free zone, so at a minimum he's going to be found guilty of that infraction, plus any add on charges they might (rightfully) thrown at him for the additional panic his gun shot no doubt added to the already chaotic situation.

I'm not sympathetic toward the guy. We work hard here in NC to make the point that gun free zones are just potential killing zones, and that the public has nothing to fear from law abiding concealed carry gun owners. One guy, doing something stupid like this undoes all those positive PR efforts.

Those dang conceal carry nuts. They are a danger to the country and the reason for so much blood flowing in the streets. There should require 10x the amount of training to get that permit and there should a law that permit holders re-qualify at least twice a month.

Oh, almost forgot to add. I believe in the second amendment, and I hunt.

If someone sees a gun and grabs it, the gun was not concealed, nor was the owner conscientious about carrying a lethal weapon. When I read stories like this I'm reminded of a notable exchange between Wyatt Earp and Ed Masterson in the movie Wyatt Earp.

Well, I'll be a son of a *****...

Wyatt:
:That fellow could've gone for his gun after he saw you buffalo his friend."

Ed:
"Maybe.
He was so drunk he couldn't hit the ground with his hat in three tries.
I'm just saying I believe I could've talked those guns off him."

Wyatt:
"If I were you, I'd look for another line of work.
Politics, maybe."

Ed's got a different style is all, Wyatt. People like it.

Wyatt:
"You could get killed in this line of work, Ed.
You could get people around you killed."

- We're just getting started. - I know.

Wyatt:(speaking to Bat Masterson)
"When I hit that fellow, your first instinct was to pull your weapon and cover me."

Wyatt:
"This is a harsh land, Ed.
It doesn't suffer fools."

Ed:
"I'm not a fool, Wyatt."

Wyatt:
"No, you're not.
But you're not a deliberate man, Ed.
I don't sense that about you.
You're too affable."

The above exchange sums up the difference between those who are serious about concealed carry and people who "aren't deliberate" about their actions.

How would anyone even know the guy had a gun unless he was displaying it? This is not the first time this type of thing has happened.
Convicts practice gun snatching religiously while in the joint.
and they practice, research, etc many other nefarious things
