Markings on the SW 686 no dash

Would anyone please comment on the meaning of markings on the stainless steel S&W 686 stamped in capital letters:

MOD 686
AEK 3302

As in my other response -

MOD = Model
AEK 3302 = Complete serial number (ALPHA ALPHA ALPHA NUM NUM NUM NUM)

Sounds like you are responding with an authority and knowledge of the topic.

I am not sure when this unit was manufactured. I was under the impression that the MOD was synonymous with modification of the certain feature in the 686 by the S&W factory. Please clarify if you can.

Manufactured in 1984. If the MOD 686 is not followed by a dash something (i.e. -1) then there should be an M stamped just above the MOD 686. If the M is not there, the revolver did not have the replacement of the hammer nose, firing pin bushing and associated parts per the recall.

Here is a pic of one that has been modified....the capital "M" was added after the mentioned parts were replaced....

What are the options if you have a gun like this without the M above the MOD 686?

Would Smith and Wesson honor the correction outlined in recall? OR
what would be the proper way to correct the problem?

If your revolver is a MOD 686 or a MOD 686-1 and it has no M to denote the modification has been made by S&W, I recommend you contact them.
