One of the best ballplayers, not just pitcher but ballplayer today was killed along with two others overnight in a boat crash. Looks like about a 30' open fisherman ate the rock jetty at Government Cut, Miami at speed.

He was a man in love with playing a kid's game. Huge smile could light up a ballpark and his enthusiasm for the game infected his teammates. He could field his position and could handle a bat. I don't think I've enjoyed watching a ballplayer work as much since I was a kid.

R.I.P. Jose, 24 years forever young.

This is incredibly sad. So young. Twenty-four years old. His life and career were really just beginning, his future looked so bright.

Descansa en paz, José. Adios.

Boating at night, especially inshore or near shore is very dangerous. Going fast makes it even worse. I've had to do it a lot, and I always go very slow and I'm still nervous doing it. Rock jetties are very hard to see.

I always keep this in mind:
I can imagine how Dale Earnhardt must have been feeling on his last Daytona 500. He's on the last lap, his son is winning the race and he's running in 3rd behind his teammate just doing some blocking. In the next instant something went terribly wrong and he went head on into the wall killing him instantly. This is all the reminder I need to try and live every minute of my life.

Such a sad story. He seemed like a great young man.

My son and I were trying to come up with a sports tragedy that was comparable, taking into account his age, and the fact that he was at the height of his career.

Sean Taylor of the Redskins came to mind, but as good as he was, I don't think he was as impactful. Fernandez was a franchise player. Tough break for the organization, as well.

Sad

Sad loss. Anyone who watched him could see how much he loved the game. Fun to watch and a true competitor.

He was a great ball player that will be missed. Reminded me of Nick Adenheart, who pitched his first baseball game with the Angels. That night he was out with friends at dinner, and on his way home was struck and killed (including 2 others in the car) by a drunk driver who ran a red light.

Very sad, seemed like a great young man... I grew up on the water, and can say that it is dangerous boating at night, never mind factoring in speed and/or drinking. Not saying that speed and/or drinking were factors here, just saying. Prayers to his family and loved ones.

Story also reminds me of how I lost all of my guns in a boating accident (too soon...?).

Marlin's lead off hitter lefty Dee Gordon wore Jose's batting helmet and took a pitch from the right side of the batter's box. He switched sides and helmets and took the third pitch deep to right for his first home run of the season... weeping openly as he circled the bases.

You just can't script moments like that.

I just saw the highlight. Hey, did some dust just get in my eyes...
