Three women go to a hotel to spend one night. They are charged $30 at the front desk (they each pay $10).

After a short while the desk manager finds that the women have been over charged by $5. The bell boy is sent up to the ladies room with 5 one dollar bills to refund the overcharge.

On the way up to the room the bell boy thinks that it will too hard to divide $5 between three women so he pockets $2 and gives each of the women $1.

So if the women each paid $9 (10-1) that is $27 and the bell boy has $2 for a total of $29.......where is the other dollar?

The room cost $25, not $27. Its the $27 that is the misleading part. So, $25 plus 3 (3 X $1 refunded) makes 28, plus the 2 the bellboy keeps=30

How did I do?

Each of the women paid $9 (10-1) that is $27, and the bell boy kept $2. Total room cost of $25 (27-2).

Each woman is due $1.66. All the bell boy has to do is get change, or let the women argue it out.

Most bellboys now probably have calculators on their Blackberries, anyway. Gad, EVERYONE has those little pocket do-it-alls, including my grandchildren!
