Matthew Quigley, Our New Pup! [UPDATED 4/13/25]

Quigley is progressing well. He has developed a bad (but natural) habit of running me down while we walk then circling me and latching on to my pant leg, bulldog style.

He would make a great catch-dog but I've got to break him from this. I know what to do, but he's gonna be a handful. Very intelligent and spirited.

I love a smart dog!

Congratulations to you and your wife on your new Best Friend! What a good looking boy he is, too!

I hope Quigley has many many happy years with you.

Watchdog, thanks for the picture blow-up.

Quigley is a great truck dog. As soon as he hears the tire noise, it's lights out.

He is an outrageously bad puppy. Never had a dog with this much drive. Never a dull moment. Everything from flipping over his water dish to trying to drag away the huge area-rug in the living room. Furniture and all. Had to sprinkle cayenne pepper on the rug's corners.

He sleeps for two-hours then raises-cain for thirty-minutes, then collapses. I take him for a quarter mile run a couple times per day. Even at only seven pounds, it won't wear him down enough.

It's gonna be a long puppyhood. But God help me, I do love it so!

Of course you love it. By my calculations, Quigley is coming up on nine-weeks-old now. Just wait until he starts seriously teething. I'll be surprised if he's completely satisfied with any chew toys you provide for him. Instead, he'll pick some other household object to chew on. A table or chair leg, maybe. The corner of a bookcase, perhaps. Puppies fixate on the strangest things.

When my male Rottweiler, Beau, started teething, he began chewing on the wooden door frames inside the house. At first it made me angry, and I'd try to correct him...provided chew things galore. I'd spent the better part of a year doing all the interior remodeling to this house myself. But no...Beau wanted his door frames. I finally decided it was no big deal. It was just a door frame...just a piece of wood. I've actually never repaired them and repainted them...just left them the way they are. I can always fix them any time I want, even replace them if I wish. But I'll never be able to replace Beau.

They are only puppies once. Don't waste a minute of this stage of Quigley's life.

Quigley Update:

All is well. He's gonna be a smart one. He already returns when you call him. He wants to herd us when we walk.

This is the best transition for a new pup that I've ever experienced. I just sleep on the couch and he crawls under it and about every two hours through the night he checks on me, then goes back to sleep. No whining or crying.

Here is a pic of Quigley asleep on his back and one with my wife.

Thanks for all the positive replies on this thread!

His pictures make me smile automatically. Damn cute dog.

What a gorgeous dog.

I love this thread--my Brittany pup Jeb just turned a year old today, and he's the calmest, coolest, most laid back bird dog I've had. Ten year old Traveller is more trouble!

Drives me up the wall. I'm used to super high energy troublemakers and like you I love 'em!

What's wrong with us!!!

By the way, Jeb was pointing and holding wild birds at 6 months...

Jeb's a winner there Cooter Brown! Beautiful pointer!

I had a Brittany named Jenifer Juniper. Absolutely the smartest dog I've ever encountered. She was a once in a lifetime talented dog.

She would point quail. But wouldn't work well with other dogs in a group. Her real talent was retrieving. She would retrieve anything. Doves and even ducks. Really.

My late Dad trained her and she was great in the field and still would be like Lassie and take care of the kids in the house. The picture below is circa 1984.

The next picture is from 1926 and my Dad was a dog handler at four-years old. I'm serious. My Grandad owned a large Quail Plantation and they raised setters and pointers. My Dad really was a dog-whisperer. He was a magician around dogs.

Dang, I wish he was here to help me with Quigley.

Quigley hit a milestone. He went to the back door TWICE today to be let out to do his business. Hallelujah!

I'm training him with Bil Jack's liver treats and a clicker. He will "sit" and also "come" when I call. Not too bad for eight-weeks!

He also gained 3 pounds this week. I've got to find a puppy food that will stiffen-up his number 2's. His are pretty loose and hard to clean up if he does a whoops on the carpet.

I solved the problem with him tipping his water bowl. Found this at Amazon. Another Hallelujah! This bowl may have saved my marriage!

Thirteen Weeks

Quigley at 13 weeks. Still in puppy bootcamp. He is a tri-color and looks just like his dad.

Also, a picture of his sister, Hedi with her ghost eyes. She is the spittin image of her mom.

Quigley is about the equivalent of a mischievous 4 year-old human child. Loves to get attention by doing what he's not suppose to.

Life is good!
