May is National Bike Month. People are planning and participating in events all across the country.
National Bike Month | League of American Bicyclists

My wife and I have been getting ourselves and our bikes ready for a bike tour coming up on Saturday May 12th.

I built my bike completely custom from a bare frame back in the late 90's and I call him Frankenbike.

He's kinda heavy but I originally built him for falling off of mountains and getting scary air.

Now though, I mostly just ride him on the C&O Canal Towpath and I switched his tires from big knobbies to something that rolls a bit better.

We call my wife's bike Mrs. Frankenbike.

Not a complete custom build but I did change the stem, handlebars, shifters, front and rear brake, brake levers, grips and added bar ends and a rear brake arch.
Those are the old tires. I've recently replaced those when the rear tire developed a bulge.

My sister and a couple of her friends are gonna meet us for the bike tour.
I'm really looking forward to it. It's gonna be a lot of fun.
I'm thinking of trying to get it on video.

Our son in law is riding in the Cheaha Challenge in a couple of weeks, 100 plus miles and lots of mountains. There is a big race in France or Italy that he wants to qualify for.

Have a blessed day,

Leon

Let me share this funny story. I was raised in Houston, Tx. where it's as flat as a pancake. I've lived in Las Vegas about 25 years now. About ten years ago, I thought, I'll buy a bike - jogging was just boring. So I bought a cheap bike, began riding a little bit...I came to a hill to ride up. Shortly after starting up the hill, I stopped...thinking something broke on the bike or something - it was so hard to peddle lol. Nothing was wrong with the bike. It was at that moment I realized how darned hard it was to peddle uphill ahahaha. I really inspected that bike too ahahahaha. I'm not kidding, I really thought something was dramatically wrong with the bike. I felt so ignorant ahahahaha. I started using that hill as my physical fitness guide so to speak, made sure I hit that hill every time I rode, and worked on my leg strength. I noticed I saw a lot of ppl would walk their bikes up that hill as I began paying attention to it. I also see a lot of ppl really into biking riding up a looonnng hill on a rural highway we have out here in Vegas. I found a respect for bicyclists I had never had before. It took that hill to show me. I tip my hat to those who do it.

Next week is the last big training week for the SIL, it's nothing for him to ride 80 or so miles before going to work in the morning.

Have a blessed day,

Leon

We have a pretty good BBQ chain in Central Ohio, called City BBQ. I've been building up to a 23 to 26 mile "Dash" to the City BBQ in the next town. Weather permitting I'm going for it the 14th. Since I'm the only participant, I'm pretty much guaranteed 1st place! The wife took the day off so she can pick-me up. I doubt I'll be able to ride home, when I'm stuffed full of Smoked Brisket and Southern Cole Slaw! One of my normal biking partners plans on meeting me about 2/3 of the way there, where a trail from his house connects. But he plans on cycling both ways, SHOW OFF!

As brother Canyon Man stated, them hills just take it out of you! One of the trails we like to ride has a deli at the end of a spur. There is a large for our area hill for most of the spur (less than 2 miles). It has a couple of grade changes along the way! I have yet to peddle all the way to the deli! Going down, it the fastest I ever been while being outside a Vehicle, 27 MPH while ridding the brakes.

I did a 18.5 mile loop today. Seemed to be uphill both ways and always a 35 mph always in my face!

Yup, my bike's got 24 speeds and I use every one of them. We have some steep hills here and I have no problem dropping down to granny gear.

There's a rail-trail out here called the GAP or Great Allegheny Passage in Cumberland Maryland.
It goes up.
We rode it out about 12 miles or so and on the way back we didn't have to turn the pedals.
Of course I did.
I put it in the big ring on the front and little ring on the back and hit 32mph.
My fastest speed was 40 down a hill right here in town.

Snubbyfann, you need to come to my area of Kansas. We host the Dirty Kanza, supposedly the nastiest 200 mile gravel/dirt, backwoods hill climbing, bike race on the planet. It amazes me how many people compete and that they come from places like Australia, Europe etc. to run the race. Its coming up in a few weeks but entry time was almost a year ago and the race fills up in a day. For more info World's Premier Gravel Grinder | Dirty Kanza

If I was a bit younger and my motor nerves cooperated better, that'd be something to look into. I'd either havta rebuild my bike or build a whole new one.

I'm trying to figure out which trail you're riding. I live down in Groveport and ride Alum Creek a lot. Longest ride for me was on a day when I had a bit of time and took it all the way north of 270 into Westerville. Round trip was 54 miles.

Snubby, no official organized bike rides planned for me this year, but definitely will put a lot of miles on the bikes this year. Did my first mountain bike ride last week, my legs are definitely in peak winter shape lol. Gonna get on the road bike today and go for 30 miles, time depending.

I just know that hiking and biking don't exactly cross over. They are good for cross training though.
We plan on doing lotsa hiking as well as more biking.
