(But the only stupid question is the one not asked) In my search for my next revolver I would like a model 66 with 3" barrel, but I can't find any for sale, not to mention much information on them. However, I do find plenty of 4" models. Would it be ill advised to have a gunsmith shorten a 4" model to 3"? Would this ultimately damage the gun or alter its functionality? I realize I could just get a 4" for the time being and when I find a 3" then I could trade them or have both and not to mention the other options. In your opinions is getting a barrel professionally cut a bad idea? Why? Thanks for the help!

I think it would be less expensive to just find and buy a 3". Having it cut correctly is costly.

I also think there are one or two for sale in the classifieds right now.

Good Luck,

Munster

There are several problems with cutting down a 66 barrel. Resetting the front sight is a big one, easier to dovetail with a aftermarket one. Barrel lettering will be off center. 4" plus guns will still be square butts unless you get later(-6?) models. If you do find a 3" gun the resale on your modified one will most likey be less than it was originally before you have the work done. There are a few places that can do quaility work like that but I would guess you are talking $250+ to have this done.

Better option is to get a 2 1/2 inch (since they had round butts) and then go to S&W parts or Brownells or Jack First and find a 3 inch barrel and then send gun and barrel to S&W for installation. Remember that you will also have to change out ejector rod and associated parts to full length and the rear sight leaf to proper height for that length barrel. S&W can do the work if you give them the gun and new barrel.

Yes. Not everything tht is possible is practical, and you would either wind up with a piece of crap or spend nearly the price of the gun.

Why not buy a 65 3"? Seems to be several of them around. Just a thought.
