Too much humidity and no protection on the guns themselves will cause rust. How you achieve that depends on the specific circumstances. I prefer to keep guns and ammo in separate cabinets (weak cabinet for ammo). Silica gel has a limited lifetime in adverse circumstances and may not be the best approach.

As you probably know, ammo stored in ammo cans lasts for decades in military storage huts.

Ditto above.

And, silica packs need to be "baked" periodically.

I have a sock filled with rice and in over a year I have had no rust on any of my guns. I also coat my rifle barrels with BLO--boiled linseed oil.

In the military our ammo bunkers only needed to be dark and dry over seas.... with a lighting system when we entered.

A lot depends on the humidity in your area.....we don't have that problem here but the S/E part of the USA, does, for your gun storage.
Usually a coat of quality oil after a good cleaning will hold of rust for 3-4 months, which is the time limit to check a weapon, by the way !!

Those old "Olive" rubber seal ammo cans are the best....!!
After you fill them you can put them any where...... well, almost. :D

I store my ammo in plastic storage bins that have a foam rubber seal. (purchased at the home center) Along with the ammo is a Knee High stocking filled with rice.
Works for me.

I have no problems and don't keep any dehumidifiers. We have all 4 seasons and plenty of humidity in the summer

I agree, ammo stores separately from my guns and mostly in ammo cans. Google "remove humidity from gun safe" and you will get more information than you want lol.
