Mayhem in Manhattan

The latest...

New York City Mayor Eric Adams provided new investigative details regarding the firearms used in the Midtown Manhattan mass shooting.
"We have discovered through our investigation… that the weapon that was used was purchased by an associate of the perpetrator,” Adams said during an interview on Fox News’ “The Story.”
“And he also purchased the firearm that was found in the car, by using a carry permit that he received in Nevada,” Adams continued.
Adams said two teams of detectives are going to Las Vegas to identify and question the associate.
Adams said a search warrant will also be conducted on his home.

For all the uninformed the shooter was born in Hawaii. I guess there is sand there but for those that don't know that is the 50th State!

He grew up in California and was a high school football standout.

He also was a concealed carry permit holder from Nevada, so guessing his mental health issues were not well known.

It will be interesting to see if CTE is present. That is a real and legitimate concern. Or if he had some other break from reality.

Not that any of that excuses the violence.
Excellent presentation of the facts.
However, the evidence of CTE, if any, was sprayed on ceiling tile when he ate his own 5.56.
This does line up with other incidents like this where the individual was taking prescription SSRI's
in some cases, that stuff seems to be able to make some wildcard killbodies

CNN just reported the suspect had mental health holds in 2022 and 2024.

Wonder how he kept his concealed carry permit?

Also reported, as stated above, he shot himself in the chest.

There are several reports that the killer in NYC yesterday used a M-4 for the killing. It was identified as such by the police Commissioner. Am I mistaken in thinking that is a select-fire rifle that is not available to We The People?
Most people in the press and many in government agencies do not know the difference between an AR15, an M16, an M4, or an AK47.

Mayor Adams just said someone else purchased the gun.
The Colt Python handgun in his car had been purchased recently, by the suspect, using his NV concealed carry permit.

He built the rifle and investigators are in Vegas to speak to someone who sold him some of the parts.

The Mayor may be correct but other reports don't back that up.

In all fairness, there really isn’t a difference unless one considers the fire-control group. The function is identical, the dimensions and manual of arms and ergonomics are identical…its the same as nit-picking the Beretta 92 vs M9 or M1911 vs Colt Government or M1873 Cold Single-Action Army vs Peacemaker.

I think the gun community makes ourselves look pedantic when we dismiss critiques based on someone’s naming.

Guess I owe an apology for part of my post but the rest stands. Mentally ill and criminals need to be dealt with so they do not infringe on everyone else's Rights. Very simple.

Several news reports mention that some components of the rifle were bought at gun shows. No details that I have seen. One mentioned a trigger. Time will tell.

Question… if he had been stopped by another guy who was carrying a gun illegally there in New York… what would’ve happened to the guy who stopped him? Would he have gotten in trouble for carrying, or would they have let it go on this occasion??
Just speculating, of course

Mayor Adams was a NYPD police officer.

NYPD refused to use AR-15 rifles for years, equipping their Emergency Services Unit and other specialized units with the traditionally stocked Ruger Mini-14 rifles. Supposedly this Mini-14 issuance was due to looking less scary than the AR-15 profile. supposedly.

After 9/11, the NYPD Homeland Security units converted en masse to the Colt M4 rifle or a few related variants. My limited work with ESU or Homeland Security units saw them always called “M4s” as a generic term.

Mayor Adams’s comments were technically incorrect, but consistent with NYPD type vocabulary. As has been noted, it was a bargain basement Palmetto State Arms rifle. All media reports/leaks indicate it was a standard semiautomatic rifle.

In lieu of celebrating the shooter, let’s remember the NYPD officer and security guard who gave their lives.

A native of Bangladesh, Didarul Islam immigrated to the United States before joining the NYPD as an officer 3½ years ago, the department said. Islam was assigned to the 47th Precinct in the Bronx but was moonlighting as uniformed private security at 345 Park Ave. on Monday night. He was married with two young sons, New York City Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch told reporters Monday, adding that Islam’s wife is pregnant with the couple’s third child.

The security guard killed in Monday’s shooting was Aland Etienne.
Police said Etienne was shot while behind his security desk after a gunman burst into the lobby of the Midtown building.

I know I don't. Those are not my firearms of choice. I'm a revolver guy and always will be. The only "military" rifles I know are the M1-Carbine, M-1 Garand and the M14. All the rest hold no interest for me. I'm probably in the minority in that opinion. Don't care. I've nothing against them or their owners, just not my thing.
