McDonalds- All the same? Not!

Uncle Sam's Army sent me to California for a little training.

I was stationed in Oklahoma and the guy across from me was from Cal. I'm from Fla.

We had some friendly ribbing back and forth for quite some time before we went to Cal.

The first place we went to was McDonalds for some eats. It was still breakfast time.

I looked up at the menu and there it was,

"FLORIDA ORANGE JUICE"

I pointed it out and a few other things about Cal. not even thinking I was IN Cal.

The locals were all giving me the stink eye.

That's because almost all orange drinking juice in the U.S. comes from Florida, even exported to Kalifornia. Kali grows all the eating oranges for the U.S.

I posed this question earlier as to if there is a McDonalds which sells wine and beer. There is only one domestic resturant that does this I'm aware of and it on the 1st floor of Corporate Headquarters in Oakbrook, Il.
I was NOT aware of the fact that some of their German locations do this as well. When I was in Germany last I avoided fast food joints like the plague.

In the past

I think mcdonalds is great for what it is. When I was a kid and traveling across country with my parents it was a **** shoot as to whether we got a successful belly fill or ending up loosing our lunch out the window.

McDonalds overall income and profit are both up. That's mainly due to sales outside the USA. USA sales are up but profit is down. They are getting beat to death in the ongoing fast food price war started several years ago. Food cost is high and the menu is getting too big.

They are successful right now due to strong foreign sales.

USA franchisees are not happy with the current forced remodels. They are all being told they need to go to one of the several new layouts no matter how old the current layout is. At a cost of $100,000+ per store.

There is no love among the owners for the high cocktail tables that supposedly seat two people. Mickey d's is not a bar and will never be a "night spot" except in a few inner city locations. Those tables are too small for people to really eat and they take up as much floor space as a real table. Plus parents with kids hate them. Try putting your kid on a seat 4' off the floor and hope they don't fall.

Ever expanding menus and the attempt to become a coffee-house atmosphere is killing them. The playgrounds are being eliminated.
It's kinda weird. They are trying to become a Wendy's in some ways; more adult oriented and wanting nighttime business.

The only reason I ever go to a McDs--is for their $1.00 any size drink (unsweet tea for me) and free wifi(where im at now) Other than that, if I go to a McDs to "eat" I bring my own food (like today) but i bought a glass of tea.

The teriyaki burger in Japan was "different".

As of roughly 10 years ago a McDonald's in Lawrence, KS had a pay phone in the doorway.

That was there in case somone saw Quantrill in the vicinity.

On a serious note--I havent seen pay phones in a McDs in my area for about 30 years--and they used to to be the walk-in type where you could close the doors for privacy.

I tried the beer (bier) at McDonald's in Augsburg, just didn't seem right drinking it out of a wax paper McD's cup. (not very good bier either IMO) but the "viertel pfunder" was good (quarter pounder)

Im not a bier trinker either but, I tried one at a McDs in Konstanz, back in late Sept 2000. They served theirs in tiny plastic water cups--their bier was schlecht--VERI shlecht. I cant remember what I ate? probably their version of a tiny burger mit pommes frites. Oh and, Mayo too.:D

I avoid McDonald's like the plague...

I would except I need their free wifi for now. When I get the new lap top? theywill no longer see me visit--unless I get invited by some people ive been chatting with who are regulars. If Wal-Bangers here in town has Wifi?id go there. Their food i 100% real as compared to 51% at mcDs. A few weeks ago,I had an appointment at the Social Security office near where I live-walked to it, was there about an hour or so. I left-it was ot and humid--and I was fatigued because of it. A McDs is about 4 blocks down the road-so I figured to get a large iced tea-and for the first time in I dont know how man years--I tried a bacon cheese burger. That was THE lousiest ""burger"" iv ever had. I couldnt finish it and just ate the fries. The good thing at that McDs--is the staff is friendly and some of the ladies cute too.

How about flatscreen TVs? I think the first one that I saw was in Gunnison, Colorado.
I was headed to the mens room, looked up and there was a flatscreen TV mounted high on the wall.
I have seen a few other since then.

Cheap gimmik to make a cheap pseudo-restaurant look like something upscale--ala--Taco Bell as featured in: Demolition Man.

I moved to TX four years ago from NC, my wife still does not believe me that there is country ham and "city ham".

I won't even say how much I miss Cheerwine, livermuch, Cookout, Hardees and Bojangles :(

You dont have to miss places like that when we have some of our own versions like: Cheddars, CHUYs, and the like.

Another trivia item: the McDonalds on the B Concourse (the United Airlines concourse) at Denver Int Airport is supposed to be the top McD franchise/money maker in the country. :)

Some of the MickeyD's in maritime Canada have a McLobster roll during season. It's pretty good. I have a craving for a Big Mac every few months, then I eat one and don't need another one for a while. Consistencey and convenience have built the chain, every now and then you get an "off" product but mostly wherever you go a BM is a BM! :) IMO.

Here's a trivia question for you. Is there a McDonalds in the United States that serves alcohol?
I'll provide the answer to this in awhile if no one knows.
Jim
I'm not sure if they still do, but several years back, I went into one in Lake Charles, Louisiana, and they had Budweiser and Bud Light on the menu.

Back in 1992 I spent the summer busting my butt working in the McDonalds in Lake George, NY so I could buy my first car. I remember one day when the manager asked me to clean out a grease trap. I'll tell you what, the stench that came out of that trap was enough to make most of the other employees gag, apparently it had been a while, a long while. Well, me being me I took care of it. What most people don't know is that when we grew up McDonalds food was done differently than it is now. The busier it is the more likely what you're getting hasn't been around longer. It used to be you would cook whatever, put it up and in so many minutes it was chucked. Back when I left working there in say 1994 they had switched from doing that because McDonalds thought they were wasting too much food, so they went to a "cooler" system. You cook the meat, stick it in these "coolers' even though they are not, set the timer for 30 minutes and then if it isn't gone, chuck it. However I can tell you I saw time after time when those clocks were just reset over and over and over again until that meat was 2 hours old or more. My wife and family and I won't eat and McDonalds and I haven't for a long time. I worked there, so I can tell you the stories. It doesn't surprise me that just recently their burgers came in last in taste. It costs more, and takes longer, but I'll go to Five Guys.
