I also am a new member, looking for advice on my first CCW handgun. I like all of the information i have found on the internet about 9 mm CCW's especially the m&p shield. Does anyone have advice on this gun as compared to others, glock, kahr, keltec etc?

Of all the names you mentioned, Glock has the longest track record. I own several. G17's and G22's. I like them and shoot them well. They always work.
Of the others, I have had bad experiences with the Kel-tec, good experience with several of the metal framed Kahrs (K-9, E-9, MK-40) and no experience with the S&W M&P.

Welcome to the Forum, from the rainy Portland OR area. If there is a public range near you, go there and try out several of their rental pistols to see what fits you and shoots best for you. I agree with the member above who talked about their reliability; same with the Kahr's. Take your time and pick the one you feel most confident in. You get what you pay for, so look, test and handle a lot of guns before deciding.
