This is Boo Boo a yearling whitetail that lives on my place. Call him Boo Boo because of his messed up spikes. One going pretty straight up and the outhe bent at the top. Really looked odd when he was in velvet. Maybe next year you look better, Boo Boo

Glad the guys survived the hunt. I use to see 2 nice little 8 pointers up until a couple weeks ago. :(

There are so many deer around here that the ones in town are generally pretty safe except for cars. I did hear that some bow hunter got the 6x6 muley buck that was hanging up by the water town. A few people are up in arms about poor sportsmanship, etc etc. Can't shoot em in town, but I don't think there is a law about archery in town.

I was at the dump once and a city cop was dumping off a deer carcass. Said "Another wayward deer. Funny though its missing its hind quarters and back straps" And laughed. I have also gotten the distinct feeling from several game wardens that evidence of a dead deer out of season isn't a big deal, but a dead deer missing just its head is a very big deal. They do not like that at all and neither do I.

I found a dead fawn about 5 years ago on my place that looked like it had been shot by a 22. Called the Fun and Games dept to see what to do. They said just haul it to the dump. Weren't even interested. I found another one a couple years later and didn't even call, just hauled it away. But they get hit by cars etc too. One of the fawns that has been coming around has a bum rear leg. He lets me get withing about 10 ft, but, I can't see whats wrong with it. They live a tuff life.

My brother said someone shot a buck along the road by his place and cut the head off. He stopped and told the game warden what he knew about it when he saw the warden checking it out. He had hear the shot and seen some kids throwing something in their truck. He didn't think much of it until he say the deer.

You can get about 7 mule deer doe tags and multiple whitetail doe tags in his part of the country. There is no shortage at all. Around here you can't shot mule deer does, but you can bucks and either sex whitetail. You can get an extra whitetail doe tag here to. You can get 3 elks tags here. I can hunt elk from late august till February in some spots near here.

So far I have never had one that was tame enough to put a hat on. When I was living in a small apartment in the shop while building the house, there was a sliding window. Use to put some hay just outside it and then open it and talk to the deer and give them stuff. One fawn of a set of twins would come take crackers from my hand. His mom would stomp her hooves, but he liked those grahams to much. I called him Piglet. Twin was not so friendly. The deer that shelter in the hedge regularly are so used to me they let me get within a few feet. But, they are still nervous of me.

I just stand around, or move slowly and speak in a low calm tone. The bucks seem to be less afraid than the does. Bucky is one of the least nervous of the ones I have know. He will come right up on his own, but right now he makes me nervous because of the rut and bucks can get crazy then.

There used to be some fencing out behind the shop and once I noticed a doe acting odd. Then I see a tail of an upside down deer with its caught in the fence. Some times deer and elk don't clear the top wire of a fence and there front leg hangs up and turns the top two wires trapping their leg. I went out with a pair of wire cutters thinking this could get interesting. The trapped deer was a young fawn with a few spots left. It had been raining and it was cold and exhausted. I cut it loose with mom looking on from a few ft away. Its leg was skinned up pretty good, but not broken. Little guy just laid there. I carried it to the shop and mom followed me. There I took an old towel from inside the door and dried him off and that and the rubbing got him going again. He wanted loose so I let him go and he hobbled over to mom and she gave him a few licks and he went to suckling. Had a bit of a limp all summer and I called him Gimp. Don't know what happened to him much after that. They come and they go, usually one or 2 does and their kids stay close and a few others wonder in and out.

Another odd thing I noticed is the does baby sit. After the fawns get a bit of size, you will see the same doe and one day she will have one fawn with her, another day 2 or even 3, then none. Usually in the afternoon.

Ps, getting real close and taking a good picture is hard. They know you are doing something and it makes them nervous. I have had my hands with in 2 ft of Bucky, but only empty. Another thing that makes them skittish is if another person is nearby. Even if the other person is 20 or 30 ft away they will not come as close to me.
