Hi Folks,

Hoping to lower the $/rd on .40 SW loads. Would eventually like to pick up some molds, but want to run some lead loads through my M&P before jumping in. To that end, I'm looking at some Meister Hard Cast Bullets 40 S&W, 175 & 155 Grain Lead Semi-Wadcutters. But am wondering if the SWC design will cause potential FTF in my M&P 40FS? Thanks in advance..as always.

You're right to try a few first. My experience with cast in .40S&W in semi-autos is mostly annoying, so I only use plated and jacketed in .40 now.
1. When you shoot lead in a semi-auto, the lube burns and blows the action full of soot.
2. Round nose and TC are far better bullet shapes in a "shoot fast" action game where every bobble is time on the clock.
3. Whereas in a revolver the seating depth is set by the crimp groove, you may have to adjust depth in a semi-auto to feed.
4. It is 105 degrees here today, and soft bullet lube is a mess on the range.

Ahhh, Soooo.

Sorry , I forgot about that one.............

and yes bullet design does play a BIG part on how the bullet feeds from the mag, up the ramp and into the chamber.

While lead does work in an Auto, I finally gave up and just used JHP bullets and best of all "Ball" for all my target work for a jam free session.
Even some Jhp bullets can be fussy about feeding right if not at the perfect OAL for your weapon, with some of the tip designs out there.

Good luck with the lead bullets, they have gotten better over the years.

I use Missouri Bullets 170 gr lead SWC in my 40's with no problems I have a STI and Kimber 1911's and a Sig 226 4.8grs WST OAL 1.22 Very accurate in all 3 guns

I cast my own 175 and 155 Lead SWC and shoot them thru a Para P16 with no problems. Plus I get great accuracy with these bullets. I use the 155's to shoot minor power factor loads in IDPA and the 175's to shoot USPSA major loads

My go to bullet for 10mm/40 S&W is the 180 Gr 38-40 LRNFP. I have had no FTF in my M&P, 4006 and 1006.
I had a few 175Gr LSWC that also functions without a hitch in my M&P and 4006.

Hi Duster340 (I Used to have one, and a 340 Demon, 360 Dart Sport and a 340 Swinger and ETC)
I cast my own .40 S&W bullets from a Lee mold. 180gr Flat point/Truncated Cone and they work great. I shoot them in a 4053 and 4014 and the accuracy is on par with any other .40 loading I have shot. Shorter barrel, bigger groups.... I use AA#5 and Unique for powders. AA#5 has a very low shot to shot velocity spread and tends to make less smoke. The lube I use is White Label BAC and does a wonderful job. $$$/rd is about $.09 ea, if I don't value my time (My primers are marked $13.99 per 1000...cost per load will go up when I start using current priced primers/powder) DANG the price has skyrocketed.

Hey all, just wanted to thank you all again for chiming in with real world feedback. It's much appreciate. I'm happy to hear folks are getting good results with cast loads in your .40's :D Knowing that, it looks like I'll be picking up a few different molds and firing up the ole Lee Production pot. Unfortunately, I tend to get hooked/addicted on stuff like this! LOL

Be well,
Pat

Hey ILLWIND, if you're like me, you probably regret getting rid some of them rides....I wish I appreciated my old cars back then.:( Who'd of thought that old iron would be so sought after all these years later. Oh well...

Take care,
Pat
