We used to REALLY like the 20 cent model that had a rubber-band driven propeller and landing gear.
We'd have competitions to see who could soup one up the most.
Modifications like adding a second rubber band, adding more "twist" to the prop, etc.
To make the competition fair we'd make them do a rolling-takeoff from a standing start on their landing gear. We'd start in the gutter with the tail up against the curb and the plane pointed towards the center of the street.
By taking off perpendicular to the direction of the street, you could use the crown of the road to help get airborne, and then we'd see who could fly farthest and fastest.
Good times. Beats the heck out of any video game I've ever seen...
