MEMES

Traditions can be a good thing
Why does this have to be an either/or?

Personally, I can appreciate the cool factor of the original Charger and still appreciate all the technological advancements that are built into the current car wearing the same Charger name.

Frankly, if I had to choose between them for my daily driver, the new version would win hands-down.

Likewise I can save a document both to my local computer AND back it up to the cloud on my OneDrive.

Best of both worlds IMO, but YMMV...

I would like to have some of the unique style and individuality of cars from another era. With the reliability and some modern amenities of new vehicles. Without the unnecessary electronics and complexity. And, expense!

How dads look when daughter announces new boyfriend is coming to pick her up.

Sounds like you want a classic car resto-mod.

FWIW, electronics are the basis for those "amenities" we all like - as well as the reliability of modern cars.

What electronics are unnecessary? Back-up cameras? Blind-spot warning devices? Lane position monitors? One man's trash is another man's treasure.
I know my wife, who can't parallel park to save her life, could use some of those features.

Personally, I don't see the downside to having most of them. Other than the fact that they may eventually require some additional (electronic) tools to diagnose and repair.

Unfortunately, eliminating the electronics also eliminates a lot of those desirable amenities you referred to - and a lot of the reliability of modern cars as well.

I always thought it was funny how my dad ranted and raved against computers - but still bragged about how his Buick Roadmaster got over 25mpg - due to its engine management COMPUTER! :)

There's no free lunch - you can't have your cake and eat it too...

JMO and YMMV.

Cars today are nothing but rolling computers. Mine automatically downloads software updates. It also tells me to keep both hands on the wheel when I drive one-handed sometimes.

Kinda spooky...not sure I like driving a car smarter than me...but older cars were probably smarter than me anyway.

Do they really need 3 body computers? Whatever happened to a switch for a light?

Saves weight and wiring. A fuller answer needs its own thread.
Absolutely. Less weight = more MPG, and chips & network cables are lighter than relays and wiring.

Since the auto manufacturers have no choice but to comply with Corporate Average Fuel Economy (CAFE) standards, they are forced to do anything and everything they can to make their vehicles lighter and more fuel efficient.

Technology is the only way they can meet those mandated "goals" - goals that are set for them and that they are forced to comply with.
