Well, maybe not exactly...They probably said something similar when this went the way of the dodo:

True. When I was looking for that image, I came across this article on the development of the electric starter, which said:
"...During the winter of 1908, a friend of [Henry, founder of Cadillac] Leland’s, Byron Carter, was killed while attempting to start a Cadillac automobile for a stranded motorist on Belle Isle in Detroit, Michigan. The driver forgot to adjust the spark, and the motor backfired, causing its crank handle to strike and break Carter’s jaw. Carter later died of pneumonia and other complications resulting from the incident. Upon hearing of his friend’s death, Leyland proclaimed, “The Cadillac car will kill no more men if we can help it!” He immediately set his engineers to work on developing a means of starting a vehicle by utilizing an electric motor..."
I've read accounts of the same thing happening and breaking a person's neck or giving them a massive concussion resulting in their being DRT.

Unfortunately I can relate to that

We used to have to crank our "B" Allis Chalmers tractor like that. We always pulled it up the up stroke so when it fired up it would kick the handle out.
