When water freezes into ice, it expands. Otherwise, ice would sink. Conversely, melting ice shrinks as it returns to liquid form. Melting icebergs won't have much effect. Melting glaciers, on the other hand . . .

And it is a good thing that it does float. If ice sank, icebergs would sink to the colder depths of the ocean and stack up. Soon the entire ocean would be frozen solid and and all life on earth would perish (or would have never existed as we know it . . . ),
