If under or along side of the gas pedal, it was the starter button, if over on the left of the clutch, it was the headlight dimmer switch.

We had a 1981 Dodge Diplomat. The floorboard button left of the brake pedal changed the radio station! The dimmer switch was a stalk on the steering column like cars have now.
