Yes....if it's in the DSM IV, it's a mental disorder.

If they find that they can use "mental illness" to deny someone access to firearms, the definition will envelope any and every kind of adverse human emotional condition. You can expect it to include physical conditions that may induce mental anguis or emotional anxiety as well.

Well is'nt that a load of ****

I have depression since my diagnoses of MS

Are they still looking into the mental Illness as mush as the background check?

This is what I just sent the nra

I need your help, I a a member of the NRA also I served in the US Marines untill I was discharged for MS.
I am a 90% disabled veteran who is really woried about some of these new laws they are trying to pass. Since my diagnoses of MS 1 symptom worries me now, I have clinical depression. If this mental illness passes in congress will I lose my right of my guns and protecting my family? Over half of the US public have a form of depression so will I be targeted since I went and got help?

i will send a letter too, devil-dog...making another round of calls monday to my representatives also...

I've been diagnosed with a degenerative peripheral motor nerve condition called multifocal motor neuropathy. Yeah I get kinda bummed at times, I'm slowly losing the ability to move, walk and hold things. Now they're going to use that as an excuse to deny me purchasing a gun while I can still hold and shoot one. Talk about depressing.

I just hope they are just going to go after the ones that make people dangerous to others.
I am sure there will be a form your dr can fill out saying your not crazy.

I wouldn't put nothing past these "gun grabbers", anything at all to do with any symptoms of mental illness will put you in the bulls eye. just my 2 cents.

I'll tell you what's really over the top, if you so much as seek counseling from your branch of service, after a tour in the sandbox for anything that may be remotely related to PTSD, this simple act of seeking help not only goes into your medical service record, but upon your discharge or retirement, this info is sent to the Veteran's Admin, who have unilaterally made a decision to report this medical information to the NICS database. It is a no wonder thousands of career types, Operators, aviators, etc steer clear of this motherless psychobabble &^%$'s, and when confronted by command about the possibility if one is feeling "blue", we all deny with a vengeance.

Once you get on the NICS database for being a "mental", you are screwed, even if it's not warranted. While you have the opportunity to contest this report, which in effect nullifies your 2A rights, the onus is on the individual to prove the military and the VA overreached and overreacted, and good luck with that adventure. angry-fist-smiley-emoticon.gif

I wish I could disagree with you but everyone is going to play CYA on this issue. If there is any question (on a mental health diagnosis) they will not take any chances and add you to "the list". And this will include people seeking assistance for depression or anxiety. Who knows what a psychologist is writing in his notes? Where those notes will end up and what decisions will be made as a result of them?

Most of the posters here show some degree of paranoia (about losing there 2nd Amendment guarantees). Including me. That, folks, may be evidence enough that we're paranoid and are not to be trusted with arms. I know. I'm just being paranoid. Whoops, I mean...

We all have to realize the sole objective of the regime is to disarm each and every one of us.Any issue relating to mental stability will be exploited to the fullest to reach the goal of a totally disarmed populace of subjects.

What about HIPPA?

My question is this: I am in the medical field and I am NOT allowed to divulge anything regarding medical issues due to this HIPPA privacy act...therefore how can mental illness be included in any Universal Background Check if the mental illness falls under the HIPPA regulations? Has anyone else thought of this? HIPPA is a Federal act I have to follow. So then...how can they expect medical professionals to divulge a person's mental illness for a background check? Have any of these brilliant lawmakers thought of this?
