A Burb of the Burgh
It's Christmas Eve here in my "Burb of the Burgh"..... so let me be the first to wish you all a Very Merry Christmas ..... and best wishes for a Happy New Year!

But; first a tale from last night..........

Twas the night times two; before Christmas,in this "Burb of the Burgh"
and all through the house
not a creature was stirring; not even a mouse.
Much thanks to our cat named;.... Willow.

Both Boys are home from College this year...
still "nestled all snug in their beds"......
..........as noon nears.

Mamma has no "kerchief" I fear ...
so she's buried herself deep
in a pile of quilt covers......

But twas a bit different.... last dead of night.

Well before the new dawn break...
our nine month old pup (Gracie) was awake.
She was raising such a clatter.....
that I had to spring from my bed to see what was the matter......
Grabbing a Mag-light and my compact "Smith 9"........
Away to the window I flew like a flash......
no shutters to open...... I just threw up the sash
But saw nothing the matter.

So I decided to "go see"...
to check out the matter....
while taking Miss Gracie with me

The moon was covered by a blanket of fog.
It made the cold night air feel quit spooky afar
I shown my light, on the last of the new fallen snow
When, what to my wondering eyes should appear,
No; not tiny reindeer.....
just a doe,.....
and two fawns from this year.

At the sight of my dog they were all lively and quick .....
but luckily for me she was on a short leash.
Gracie was quite aroused and excited........
so I called them bad names, and
cried out to them; Now dash away!.....dash away...... dash away all!

As dry leaves that before the hurricane fly,
they ran towards my neighbor's abode in full flight;
as they came to an obstacle, they mount to the sky
Like the down of a thistle
they were over that fence
with a loud deer whistle.

In my diversion...........
Mamma had sprung from her bed
to the top of the stair....
and I heard her exclaim,as they flew out of sight................

"What the hell's going on down there!!!!
I'm trying to sleep !!!!!!"

So on this Christmas Eve morn ..........
let me just say.......
Merry Christmas to all..
..... and more coffee please!

With the thick fog it's a bit spooky here..................... think someone's going to need Rudolph tonight!!!

Thanks

Unlike Clement C Moore....... my Christmas "poem" needed a bit of editing!

OK a lot of editing....... caffeine will do that to you!

So if you read it before 2:30PM..... try it again......... not that it's any better; humor me.......... it's Christmas Eve!!

Now where's that damn Dog................................. :D

Merry Christmas everyone. I remember a Christmas Eve, must have been '62 or '63, I was 4-5 years old. I was very excited and making a big fuss, not wanting to go to bed. Mom and Dad had Santa work to do and then relax before I woke up at O'dark 30. So Dad took me out on the porch and pointed to Rudolf's red nose over by the horizon. "They're almost here, Santa knows when you're awake." So, not wanting to anger Santa off to bed I went. That radio tower warning beacon will still be shining tonight.

HAPPY CHRISTMAS too everyone from me and the wicked evil feral Shelby Cat.

Merry Christmas!

Merry Christmas!

I am a Christian and as Jerry Clower used to say: ''I love everyone one here, but some of Y'all are harder to love than the others.''

Merry Christmas to all !!

We had the family over for a celebration on Christmas eve.
It was fun watching the grandkids get worked up opening gifts.
Today will be a day of rest for my wife and I but we may go over to the oldest sons to see the kids for a short visit.

Merry Christmas. Suppose to be 61 here in sw Iowa today...not a winter wonderland, but after last year, I take it.
Got this last night from my brother in law.

A Christmas Poem

The embers glowed softly, and in their dim light,
I gazed round the room and I cherished the sight.
My wife was asleep, her head on my chest,
My daughter beside me, angelic in rest
Outside the snow fell, a blanket of white,
transforming the yard to a winter delight.

The sparkling lights in the tree I believe,
Completed the magic that was Christmas Eve

My eyelids were heavy, my breathing was deep,
Secure and surrounded by love, I would sleep,
In perfect contentment, or so it would seem,
So I slumbered, perhaps I started to dream.

The sound wasn't loud, and it wasn't too near,
But I opened my eyes when it tickled my ear.
Perhaps just a cough, I didn't quite know,

Then the sure sound of footsteps outside in the snow.
My soul gave a tremble, I struggled to hear,
And I crept to the door just to see who was near.

Standing out in the cold and the dark of the night,
A lone figure stood his face weary and tight.
A soldier, I puzzled, some twenty years old,
Perhaps a Marine, huddled here in the cold.
Alone in the dark, he looked up and smiled,
Standing watch over me, and my wife and my child.

"What are you doing?" I asked without fear,
"Come in this moment, it's freezing out here!
Put down your pack; brush the snow from your sleeve,
You should be at home on a cold Christmas Eve!"
For barely a moment I saw his eyes shift,
Away from the cold and the snow blown in drifts,

To the window that danced with a warm fire's light.
Then he sighed and he said "Its really all right,
I'm out here by choice. I'm here every night."

"It's my duty to stand at the front of the line,
That separates you from the darkest of times.

No one had to ask or beg or implore,
I'm proud to stand here like my fathers before.
My Gramps died at Pearl on a day in December."
Then he sighed, "That's a Christmas Gram always remembers."

"My dad stood his watch in the jungles of ' Nam ',
And now it is my turn and so, here I am.

I've not seen my own son in more than a while,
But my wife sends me pictures; he's sure got her smile."
Then he bent and he carefully pulled from his bag,
The red, white, and blue... an American flag.

"I can live through the cold and the being alone,
Away from my family, my house and my home

I can stand at my post through the rain and the sleet,
I can sleep in a foxhole with little to eat.
I can carry the weight of killing another,
Or lay down my life for my sister or brother,
Who stand at the front against any and all
To ensure for all time that this flag will not fall."

"So go back inside," he said, "Harbor no fright,
Your family is waiting and I'll be all right."
"But isn't there something I can do, at the least?
Give you money," I asked, "Or prepare you a feast?
It seems all too little for all that you've done,
for being away from your wife and your son."

Then his eye welled a tear that held no regret,
"Just tell us you love us, and never forget
To fight for our rights back at home while we're gone,
To stand your own watch, no matter how long
For when we come home, either standing or dead,
To know you remember we fought and we bled
Is payment enough, and with that we will trust,
that we mattered to you as you mattered to us."

Merry Christmas to all.

I just got a Christmas gift from the next-door neighbor's dogs. The wife and I were watching TV when we heard some noises out back. I thought it was the neighbors coming home from their Christmas visiting.

Nope. Their dogs were lonely and dug under the fence into my yard. Then when they wanted out they destroyed my front gate to escape. So I'm out in the dark trying to temporarily patch up the gate and to stuff heavy objects into the hole they dug so our dogs won't escape while they are outside.

Sadly this isn't the first time I've had to do this this year. I hope it's the last, though.
