Standard Catalog of S&W 4th Edition. SN range 1-209791 from 1917 to 1946. About 164,000 produced for the Army between Sept. 1917 to January 1919. With your low SN I would guess late 1917 or early 1918.

Nearly all WWI S&W 1917s left the factory in 1918. Yours probably shipped in March or possibly April.

Yes, nearly all. And those made in 1917 (all below approximately 9600) are all from December.
I previously got the following reply from Mr. Jinks on my ship date request:
".45 H.E. 1917 serial 1514 was shipped in November 1917. First Production Run".

Yes, there's a contradiction between military records and S&W records. S&W records take precedent.

Did he happen to say how many were in the first production run? I have an early example in the 18XX s/n range.

I think I've read it here, before but can't seem to locate the thread showing numbers in the first shipment.
