So it looks like NY is following in the footsteps of CA, the microstamping bill has passed the Assembly. We here in NY need to write to our Senators ASAP. Here is a link with studies and what not that you can incorporate into your emails or letters.

Please call or write and spread the word.

the assembly is the house in NY.

You hope it doesnt pass the senate. When I lived in NY all the gun bill died in the senate. You have that blind guy in the gov. mansion. He cant see a thing so he will sign anything on his desk. Good bad or ungly

Since 80% of homicides are committed by gang members and those dealing in illegal drugs, and since most firearms used in these crimes are stolen and not legally registered, this is another attempt by the anti's to stick a thorn in the side of those who follow the law in their gun purchases. They know it would do absolutely nothing to help solve a crime. Just added cost to us.

Microstamping has one purpose, and that is to stop manufacturers from shipping guns into whatever state passes this moronic law. It has absolutely nothing to do with crime reduction, or solving crimes, and everything to do with stopping gunmakers from being able to sell their product in that state.

They know this and don't care if you know it as well. It is no different than the "serial number on every bullet base". They know that it is impossible for manufacturers to do this, and can basically ban ammo in this way. Same thing with micro-stamping. No gun maker is going to do it.

They tried the system in Maryland, and it was a proven bust.

The MD-IBIS postmortem noted,

One year later, the Maryland State Police Forensic Sciences Division reversed course, citing "the failure of the MD-IBIS to provide any meaningful hits." The report found that the program "has not met expectations and does not aid in the Mission statement of the Department of State Police." It recommended that the data collection be suspended and that MD-IBIS staff be transferred to the DNA database unit.

It was defunded in 2005, regarded even by its founders as a failure. SAAMI found in 2008 that New York City's system was so backlogged that new guns would not be entered into the database for at least three years. Consider that the average time-to-crime in NYC is 11 months, and you can see the failure in their system.

This is one of those situations in which it's easiest to convince your legislators that it's a waste or money than it is an infringement of a right. Cost/benefit matters more to them than anything.

Just a suggestion to all living in NY.

Move. Get out of there and never look back.

It would be nice if it was that easy....New York is a great state, but with a lot of problems. The citizens need to take back Albany and get rid of the liberty crushing laws which hold the state down.

I would seriously consider moving back there if it wasn't for the ties I have to my current location.

The Maryland IBIS System that got defunded and shutdown is the ballistic fingerprinting of the handgun cartridge case folly I think.
Keep a fired case from every handgun on file to match it up with one from a crime scene and presto,,bad guy in custody. I guess it works better on TV.

Unfortunetly, NYS already has that system in place. Micro stamping would be in addition to that.

What's better than one ineffective program costing millions??,,,,,

Paterson's through as Gov. But the next guy in line will most probably be Andrew Cuomo.
He has his long range sights set on the White House you can be sure of that,,,and as the former HUD Sec. under Clinton he had major influence on the language of the AWB.
These people never go away.

I don't think Hillary's thrown in the towel quite yet over being in the White House either.

Some bad ideas just will not go away. With tight leo budgets, lets spend wads of cash on a program that will produce marginal results at best!! Just another program that can be waved around at election time to show how much politican care about people, not actual results. Put cops on the street and back them up when they need it! @#%$#, I JUST FELL OFF MY SOAP BOX!

wont pass the house

You mean the Senate in NY. I wouldn't be quite 100% sure of it's defeat, now that it's under Demo control for the first time in decades. All those State Senators from the "pro-gun" districts have to weigh their local obligations and campaign promises against their leadership's wishes and demands.
Just because it sounds like a career-ending stance doesn't mean that they will vote your way. Just look at the Health Care voting in DC.
Keep those e-mails, letters, and phone calls coming to your Senators. Complacency is not a good option.

Although passed in CA - it could not be implemented because they put in a clause stating the technology had to be unencumbered by any patents. Any chance the NY law contains the same ? The idiots pushing this have a BIG financial investment and are not going to give it away.

it's about time

Everyone needs to write TODAY, go to this link and you can get a ton of stuff to put in your letter:

Firearm microstamping - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

I glanced at the text of the bill and find that it fits perfetly with my pre-conceptions of New Yorkers' freedom hating predilictions.

Does delivery of a firearm to a "person" include the various police agencies? I suspect that the bill is intended to exclude government entities, but if it doesn't , I think that the bill would be a fantastic back-to-future development. Since reliability of the modified microstamp ready pistols isn't an issue, just think of the rubbish that might be on offer after the "microstamp job shops" are done with the pistols! New York might need to go back to the revolver.

On the other hand, I'd love for manufacturers to eschew New York's business and refuse to sell pistols to the government entities.

I also like the pack up and move out of NY suggestions. What's so great about the state? High and pervasive taxes? The gun laws? Your Federal Senators?

One would think that SOME politicians would want to see proof that this assinine concept would work. Such as having a demo that shows it will work under less than ideal conditions for more than one shot.

Have they ever heard that guns like Glocks sort of "smear" firing pin impressions as the gun starts into its recoil cycle with the firing pin in contact with the primer, thus rendering any impression useless? Not to mention that a few swipes of wet/dry sanding paper would eliminate any microstamping, something that would be absurdly easy on most any semi auto pistol.

Aw, what's wrong with me?? Suggesting politicians exhibit common sense or even any kind of sense, what am I thinking?? Don

Then there is the guy that uses a moonclip revo and dumps a few "seed" casings he collected at the range to throw the cops off the scent. Reasonable doubt guranteed at trial, when the casing match another gun that was not reported stolen. We have this crap law too, but it cant be implemented due to patents...
