After alot of pondering and deciding, I sold my 629 mountain gun to purchase a Alaskan 454 casull. This gun is not the beauty the mountain gun was but I have to say it is a big hunk of metal brute. It sure does pack a punch with full loads of 454 in it. I would have never bought it but was set up to reload 45 colt. When they say that a 454 load is approx. 1 and one half more than a 44 mag. they weren't lying. I still have my Model 60-9 for carry so I still have a Smith in my safe. But all in all it was sad too see it go. Wished I could have afforded both. Thanks :(

I've made similar moves when trading firearms. Some even worse. I've owned two Alaskans, both the .454 and .44 mag versions. While they are nice guns, I'm back to a 629 3".
I've tried to like the .454 in three or four different guns including a lever action carbine. It's either just too much gun, or I'm just a wimp. For revolvers, I'll stick to .44 mag. For rifles, I like enough umph to get the job done without dislocating my shoulder.

The Alaskans have appeal to me but I have found that my accuracy with snubbies and other short sight radius revolvers is disappointing. Don

My Alaskan is far more accurate than I am. I don't know if that is good news, or bad...

But when finances allow, I'd like to get a 5" 629. I think I could carry it about as well and shoot it better. And no, I have enough trouble with numbness in my hand after shooting 24 rounds of 44 Mag - I don't even want to THINK about what a 454 must be like. If that makes me a chicken, well, then, BWAWWKK! BWAWWKK!:D

Perhaps someone misunderstood me. I am certainly not saying the Alaskan isn't accurate, short barreled revolvers can be quite accurate, just that I don't shoot them well. Don

I was looking at 454 Alaskans for a year or two when a 460 es snub nose showed up at my dealer. It was a no brainer it shoots the 454 casull and the 460 smith and wesson mag.

I bought a pair of the 454 Alaskans when they came out. Sold both. would not mind getting one back. Nice piece of iron. easy to carry in the proper rig. cool and fun.

I was faced with the same problem and simply 'loaned' my MG to my son. I have found my .44M Alaskan to be both rugged and well balanced as well as being a 'softer' felt recoil handgun.
