I've been offered an S&W Mod 28-2 Smolt (S&W w/Colt 6" Python bbl). It looks in excellent condition and it also has the original bbl with it. The bbl is pinned. No box and the grips are wood "Harrets" which look to have been orignally made for a K frame and opened for the N. Can the bbls be changed easily if I want to go back to the original bbl? Lock-up is tight and there is minimum end-shake. He's asking $700. Is this worth it? Thanks, Dennis

Seems high by at least a couple of hundred bucks. Colt barrels do have a reputation for straight shootin' and a Smolt could be a fun novelty item. For me it would only be worth the sum of it's parts but that is only a single opinion.

hard to price those, I paid $400 for mine(19 smolt) and am pretty sure that was a deal. One on GB for 1200 I think.

my guess is someone will/would pay $700 for it

dont think its easy to swap back to the OEM barrel, if it was it would be a $400-500 gun

IF you were to buy it...get an iron clad 3 day inspection period with a right to return...if the work wasn't done properly. There are a lot of basement gunsmiths out there who routinely RUIN guns with botched work.

Still sounds high though.

I have seen one of those once a while back, wasn't very well done. As a sidebar, if you put a Dan Wesson barrel on a Colt, would that make it a Dolt?

I have a 4" Smolt on a M19, love the gun. It is probably over priced. Like mine, I couldn't sell it for what it cost to make it, so it's a keeper. Get him down to $550 & shoot the heck out of it.

Smolt

I've had three built on diff. frames over the years, Davis, Bain and Nuline Gun Works. All done in the 80s, all were great shooting pistols, just got thee M66 back after 20 years. Wish I had kept the M27. Also did a M19. They can be put back with a factory s&w barrel as the threads are recut on the colt barrel. I think you would enjoy it for a shooter. While some may think it high and others might find one cheaper at times, but they are not plentiful by any means, you couldn't buy a M28 and a Python barrel and get it built for $700. It comes down to if you'll be happy with a custom gun of this type, but check it out cafefully as others have advised!! Good luck with your decision!

if it was a professional conversion- especially with supporting invoice or work order- $700 wouldn't seem too far out of line. of course if he's willing to negotiate a little, so much the better :)

Yes, supporting documents ie. letters and sales receipts from Davis are included. I'll go for it. If I don't, I'll probably regret it. Thanks for all the info. Dennis

OK guys. I'm really confused. I have an old style Python barrel in front of me and a Model 29 barrel in front of me. The OD of the threads on each are: Model 29 - ~.650"; Python - .555" tapering to .545" nearest the cylinder. What method was used to fit a Python barrel to an N frame?
