I have a model 29-2, 3 screw, ser#S228***, 61/2" barrel, 44 mag. It has adjustable rear site, and wide trigger (target trigger?) It is a bit different in color as it looks to be a brushed nickel it is not a shiney nickel but a flat or mat finish. This is an older revolver as I am 71 and I remember my dad purchasing it from the original owner (our pastor) when I was around 13. Hammer and trigger are same color as the rest of gun, not blued like I've seen in some pics.
Was wondering if anyone would have any idea what yr this was made, and anything else interesting about this gun. I am unable to attach a photo. Thanks

I can't tell you about the finish, but at that SN yours would date to about 1962. Others may know more about finishes at that time. The only plated ones I have seen were mirror-bright. The purchase would have necessarily been a lot later than 1955.

Some possibilities:

First possibility: It's original nickel and dull from exposure to chemicals or has been worn into the current appearance. The hammer and trigger are a problem because they should be color case hardened (swirling blue/black) and not plated. Either they have had the finish removed or are plated meaning the whole gun is likely refinished.

Second possibility: It's been refinished in dull chrome.

Third possibility: It's actually bare metal devoid of any finish.

I had missed the part about a plated hammer and trigger. If that's the case, and the revolver DOES have a plated finish, it is highly probable your revolver has received a non-factory plating job (which may be frosty or dull due to incorrect plating conditions). Hammers and triggers were never factory plated, but show the typical mottled case-hardening colors.

Can the letter "N" be seen stamped anywhere on the revolver (possibly on the grip frame under the grips) and/or on the rear face of the cylinder? I am not certain, but without an "N" stamping somewhere, it was not factory plated, and may well have left the factory as a blued gun which an earlier owner had plated. A factory letter ($50) would tell if the nickel plated finish was original.

It sounds like it was either re-finished in a hard chrome/Metaloy type finish, or someone paid to have it electroless nickel plated. As stated above, that serial number is early '60's.

Possibly you are recalling another gun your dad bought when you were 13? That, or your dad bought it when you were a lot older than you are recalling right now.
