I have a 32 long cal S&W 6 shot revolver. The gun has a round butt, three screws. Mod. 30-1. Ser # H10xxx. It is hand ejected. has no strain screw. Would appreciate any info as to the age of the gun. Also any info on resource for a nice leather holster since I plan on using this newly acquired piece as a daily carry. i am a newbie to this forum and will really appreciate your help

Welcome to the forum. :D
The serial number dates the gun to 1969-70.
There are plenty of holsters avalible for this from almost every maker as its a standard J-Frame revolver. I suggest you visit your local gun shop and see what they have.
I have quite a fondness for the little .32s. My wife used a Model 30-1 as her personal defense firearm. Its not exactly a powerhouse, but if you do your part, it should serve you well. ;)

The 32 Long was considered a police round for many years, and has done it's share of protection duty. The 32 is inherently accurate, and with the right ammo is nothing to sneeze at.

The .32 S&W Long offers superb accuracy, light recoil, relatively quiet report. It is by no means a rip-snorting self defense cartridge, even with Buffal Bore or MagTech ammo.

That said, here are the types of holsters I use with my four .32 S&W Long revolvers, LOL!!

Many of the custom holster makers offer products similar or superior to the holsters I have shown. I was trying to give you an idea of what is available.

Proper ammunition should always be used in a firearm. Your gun is made for the .32 S&W Long cartridge. Firearms chambered for the .32 S&W Long will also safely chamber and fire the shorter, less powerful .32 S&W cartridge. This is the best advice a person of sound mind should dispense to another.

A full box of .32 a.c.p. is not a waste, rather a reason to search for and purchase a pistol chambered in that caliber. That is what a responsible person would do.

"Can" you shoot 32 acp ammo in your Model 30-1? Absolutely. Should you? Therein lies the debate. If I needed ammo to defend hearth and home, I wouldn't hesitate to use the acp round if S&W Long ammo were unavailable, but since I reload for the latter and not for the former, that is an unlikely scenario. It would be less accurate and perhaps a little more stressful on the revolver to shoot the higher pressure acp ammo in the revolver, but one can do it if one so desires. The foregoing is JMHO based on personal experience, YMMV.

Come on, you don't shoot that.:) It doesn't even have a turn line. You shoot that as much as I shoot mine.:) And being a flat latch it's a model 30 or a pre model.
I have with this one with no issues at all.

DW,

It's actually a Model 30-1 and a J frame which used the flat latch until 1966. Pre model and Mod 30s are I frames with flat latches.

Buddy shoot them to your hearts content and here's why.
(Note: I do not say this applies to just any .32 firearm but in the context of this discussion about a S&W .32 long firearm made after WW II.)

Although shooting the correct ammo that the gun is intended for is always wise advice (especially for the novice), those that say you can shoot .32 ACP are learned members that are not giving you bad advice in this instance. Ammo is basically produced for guns based on correct power level (pressure) and dimensions.

PRESSURE: Let's compare the two cartridges in question.

ANSI/SAAMI Pistol Pressure Specifications (Maximum Average pressure)
All Piezo measurements (unless specified CUP)

.32 S&W Long 15,000
.32 ACP 20,500

Then consider that S&W is a premium firearm; these guns are designed, tested and certified with a safety margin of at least a 50% higher pressure level than the intended ammo.

Now also consider that virtually your same gun which has a heat treated cylinder was later produced by S&W in the .32 H&R Mag:
32 H&R Magnum 21,000

DIMENSIONS: It's true that the .32 ACP is not dimensionally exactly the same as the .32 Long in diameter. However the differences are mere thousandths of an inch and within reasonable tolerances. Actual cylinder chamber manufacturing dimensions can vary more than this and still be within manufacturer's specified safety tolerances.

The worse that can happen is a case could rupture; I've never had this experience with .32 ACP in a .32 Long chamber or heard of anyone that has. BUT I have had ruptures of the proper ammo in the proper gun. That's why wearing safety glasses is mandatory and we follow safety rules when discharging firearms.

I believe once the facts are known each can then make a choice they are most comfortable with.

Hope that helps,

Buddy, as you can see your first decision is the type of holster; inside or outside the waistband, angle of the draw, lined vs. unlined, etc., before even considering price and maker. There are also ankle and shoulder holster choices for your .32. Also consider concealment during hot weather attire vs. cold weather clothing.

Except in the case of the top middle type holster for inside the waistband, which is smooth side in and of softer leather, I would always prefer a soft lined holster for the protection of the gun's finish.

You have some shopping to do!

Everyone might appreciate a true Model 30 story. I wasn't there myself, but I heard it a number of times from a former girlfriend who was at the center of it. I always liked to hear her tell it.

She was asleep and heard screaming outside her apartment coming from a grown-up vacant lot next to her building. She grabbed her Model 30 and went running down the steps with her robe and nightgown flowing out behind and carrying her Model 30 at high port. She saw a guy who had dragged a girl into the bushes. She started yelling at him and when he saw her coming with a gun he hit the trail at high speed.

My own mental picture of her with white "robes" and long red hair flying behind as she came down the stairs must have made her look like some sort of avenging angel armed with a Smith and Wesson.

They never caught the guy, unfortunately, but the story had as good an ending as possible under the circumstances.

Jim, thanks for all the info. I feel more confident now, primarily though, I will use the .32 long ammo.

Jim, Right on---and to add to the issue, I am a lefty (at least most of the time). I have never worn a shoulder holster but think I might try if I can find one. I find the "warm weather" issue to be a special problem and tend to not carry, and I don't like that. Any suggestions?
