Hello all, I have S&W model 36 -no dash flat latch. Diamond grips, 3" barrel Serial # 1384xx. Is there any way to figure out if this indeed C&R eligible? From my reading it's very near the transistion of numbers and C&R eligibility?

thanks

bob

It looks to me that your gun was made in about 1958 based on interpeting the serial number. That would make 52 years old and eligible for shipping to a C&R license. The ending serial number in 1957 was 125000 so that's why I believe yours was made in late 1958.

Any commercially produced firearm (military rifles have conditions apply) that is 50 years old is automatically granted C&R status. Since any pre-model marked S&W would have to have been made no later than 1957, any such gun is C&R.

It stands for a Curios & Relics and is dealer's license and it has different rules then the FFL license.

C&R is not a "Dealers License", the BATF language specifically identifies it as NOT A Dealers License. It is for Collectors, and has quite a bit of different rules for it's use.

One of the benefits of membership in the Smith and Wesson Collectors Association is the ability to check shipping dates. Go to the SWCA Public area in this forum, and check out the information on joining.

It is a great association, and I highly recommend it.
