Mod. 41

The 41 is perhaps my favorite pistol. When it's good, it's really good. When it's bad, well then . . . .

My 41 usually behaves but now and then it has a bad day. Just like humans. A little TLC and it goes back to behaving well. Sometimes though, it's more like a dog than a human. Get it too clean and it's unhappy with me until it rolls in the dirt for a while.

idling,

Looks to me to be about a 1985 model you've got there. It's a lot of fun to shoot a pistol this accurate but there is a downside. If the shot is not dead center, you can't blame the pistol!

Here's a picture of my favorite. It's a classic 59 model.

True that!

I bought a brand new one Performance Center model 41 5 or 6 weeks ago. The gun will not cycle manually. You cant rack the slide, the safety wont budge. and the trigger guard will nut pull down for disassembly. In other words not one single function works out of the box. Oh, did I mention this came from the Performance Center hand tuned. What a joke. I sent it back they told me 6 to 8 weeks before they can get to it. I never even got to put ammo in it. The only thing that worked was the mag release. Not happy! Total P.O.S

Sent my new 41 back to S&W for poor cycling and a stuck trigger guard in the open position. After 8 weeks at S&W, got it back, but had to send it back again for a stuck trigger guard. Anyway, they turned it around in two weeks and so far so good. If I didn't love the looks and feel of the 41 so much, I'd be annoyed as hell.

Is that "relieved" notch at the slide muzzle peculiar to that model ?? Beautiful gun. :)

I believe that is a 5" sport barrel made from a 7 - 7 1/2" target barrel. The notch is what is left of the reduced area at the front of the long barrel.

sceva beat me to answering your question. S&W introduced the 5" field barrel in September 1959 with the first one shipped on September 2, 1959. This was the first barrel option for the model 41. It could be purchased as a complete pistol or as an accessory. Most seem to have been made by cutting the 7 3/8" barrel to 5" and relocating the front sight but some are believed to have been forged as a 5". It was designed to allow the model 41 to be carried in the field as a hunting companion. It reduces the weight and shifted the balance closer to the hand and gives a very different feel to the pistol.

Mine was shipped on September 11, 1959 with the 5" barrel and I was very fortunate to have been the high bid at an estate auction. It did come with the box and I've since found an early 7 3/8" to make the set.

This one seems to always find its way into the range bag. It is easy to understand why since it never misses a beat, provides superb accuracy and is just such a pleasure to shoot!

Run out and buy a lottery ticket! :D

I too love my M41 and it also is utterly reliable - but did have a few hiccups when I first bought it in 1979. After a few weeks of shooting when new in 1979 and some fiddle futzing, I got it running 100%. Many people do have some minor glitches out of he box these days. Some M41's are nightmares but most are able to be brought to a reliable state.

Glad you got a winner!

The for sure way to tell is it has the filled hole for the internal barrel weight.

I bought mine used from an estate sale with box and 2 mags. I have since added additional mags. I've read of many folks having all kinds of issues here but I must be one of the fortunate ones - mine runs great. I put a recoil buffer in it and picked up a voltzquaren exact edge extractor to have in case mine started having issues but haven't needed it. Picked up my model 17 from same estate which is also fantastic. I have a hard time leaving one or both of them home when going to the range.

I got my new model 41 back. Everything manually cycled just fine. I loaded it with CCI 22 mini mags and the first round jammed. LOL I will give them the benefit of the doubt and break it it in with standard velocity lead, recommended. Again can't tell you how Smith went above the call of duty.

My Model 41 is the most accurate .22 I own. I've used hyper-velocity .22 ammunition which are not noted for accuracy shoot tight groups from this pistol.

When you got your 41 did it come with the part brake down. The one I have is falling apart. I was hoping that you could make a copy of yous and e-mail it to me.
